July 25, 2021 Renato Branum

A top destination for all visitors to the Northern Territory’s Top End is Litchfield National Park, just a 90 minute drive from Darwin. The area is famous for its stunning landscapes, swimming holes and iconic magnetic termite mounds. Numerous waterfalls from natural springs cascade into pristine rockholes, surrounded by monsoonal forests and pandanus. This adventure playground offers great four-wheel drive tracks, and bush walks that vary from one hour to three days.

Magnetic Termite Mounds

One of Litchfield National Park’s most impressive sights is the hundreds of Cathedral and Magnetic termite mounds, some stand as high as two metres. Up to 100 years old these structures are unique to northern parts of Australia and Litchfield National Park in particular. There is a dedicated viewing area with a short boardwalk within the national park.

Fabulous to see from the boardwalk, and well documented info hut for travelers to enjoy. Quite amazing to think these little ants can build homes to keep themselves shaded from the hot NT sun. All these mounds are built facing magnetic north. There is another larger group of Termite mounds other at the end of the Litchfield track if you do the round trip.( Road closed in the wet season) Dont forget your water bottles - and your insect repellent.

Went out to Litchfield for a day trip and went to Wangi Falls first and it did not disappoint. Even though it was wet season and we couldn’t swim (as the water levels were too high) we could still do the 1.7km loop walk and stand and admire the stunning waterfall. Highly recommend.

Bring your swimmers for this unforgettable experience of a swim in the cool waters beneath a natural waterfall ..... there is an easy walk ( after first descending 150 stairs ) from the car park along an easy , shady walk along a forest stream .... the pathway is well constructed with rock, & is an easy walk, traversing the creek at least half a dozen times via sturdy bridges .... which also serve to protect the forest floor from our clomping feet ... this walk is not recommended for those who are mobility. ” challenged “. But requires only a moderate level of fitness otherwise .... A truly wonderful experience in the rainforest . We didn’t see any wildlife, but this was not surprising given the heat of the day, & the ( also unsurprising) number of fellow travellers enjoying the bush .

A short walk to the lookout and being the wet season and a wet one at that the falls were at their best. Well worth the walk a must do if visiting the area.
