Lincoln State Monument

Reviewed By javiertrost - Ruidoso, United States

Lincoln is most famous for Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. There are anywhere from 7 to 9 buildings you can tour as well as a documentary film that talks about how life was back in the Old West. It is run by the state of New Mexico. There are also a few small businesses that sell tourist gifts. The winter is their slower season. Individuals who have an interest in American West history should visit and know that as they walk throughout town they will be walking in the footsteps of people such as Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

Monjeau Lookout

You car will get dirty. Your car can be washed as the wonderful full service car wash on the right as you go back into Ruidoso. (No I don’t own the car wash). This is a wonderful drive, take it easy and you will see wildlife and wild mustangs. Once you get to the parking lot it’s a 2 minute walk (not sandals) to the lookout. I am NOT a hiker and I am not in shape. I can do it and it’s worth every step. Take a camera and something to feed the chipmunks.

When you go to Lincoln, New Mexico you are finding the spirits of the Lincoln County War. In the heart of the state of New Mexico, lies the historic ghost town of Lincoln. Lincoln is where the famous stories of Billy the Kid, the Regulators, and the Lincoln County Wars started their old west legends. We went to Lincoln in search of Billy the Kid history to video for our YouTube channel Colorado Martini. But we found a whole lot more than Billy. We found the ghosts of the past. Literately this place is very haunted and we found some of that. I kid you not. The whole town is a museum. And is basically a ghost town. If you are traveling to Texas or going to White Sands or Carlsbad Cavern, Make sure you put Lincoln on your list. BTW Billy the Kid is not buried here. And only has small B&B. You can find motels in Capitan and can visit Smokey the Bear museum while there. Or stay in Ruidoso. We do not recommend staying in Roswell. Which is only 1 hour to the east. Gas up before going to Lincoln. You can only find gas in Capitan to the west.
