Situated on the Dutch border, Limburg is the easternmost province in Flanders, and the foremost fruit-growing region in the country. The lively, friendly market town of Hasselt is the provincial capital. It boasts a car-free historic center, with building dating back as far as the 11th century. Genk is another recommended stop. The city of 63,000 people is home to a zoo, a planetarium, De Maten nature reserve and Bokrijk, an open-air museum of 19th century Flemish architecture.

This is the only Belgian wine castle. The estate is beautifully maintained with manicured gardens, nice buildings and the lovely central castle in neo classical style. The estate can be entirely visited (guided tours - all common international languages possible) except the inside of the castle itself which is only for private use of the owners. The guides are well informed about every detail of this wine estate and the process of wine making and share this information in a for everyone understandable way. You learn why the surroundings are an ideal terroir for the wines they produce and why they produce that sort of wines. As well the historic cellars as the newly build cellars with lots of oak barrels are impressive. The wine tasting at the end is highly recommended, and yes the wine is excellent and worthwhile to buy a couple of boxes to take home. Don't forget to taste the distilled products and the bubbles they make too. Absolutely a super experience.

Brewery the Toeteler is a traditional brewery in Hoeselt. Here we make beers from A to Z with natural raw materials and according to traditional brewing methods. Our guide takes you to the brewery of Brouwerij Den Toeteler! No museum, no flashy animated screens and videos, but discover from close up how things really work in a brewery. Your host is an experienced beer expert who takes you through the fascinating story of the brewery, the history of beer in Hoeselt and explains everything about beer brewing, from malts to yeasts. He proudly presents the different beers, of course! The tour with tasting of two Toeteler beers of your choice costs € 7 per person and takes approximately 1.5 hours. A tour can be booked for every evening or during the weekend, but is limited for groups of 10 people and a maximum of 40 people.

The winery is a thing of breauty - incredibly clean and a tasting room with plenty of wines to choose and always a wood burning fire. The passion of the owners - Karel and Tine Henckens - shows in all their wines. While the Pinots are excellent the Chardonney is one of the best I have tasted and on a par with the best in California. The sparkling wines are also excellent and a bargain for their quality. Try all the wines and don't be put off by the grape types - you'll be surprised at what passionate winemaking can do.
