Lecco (Italian pronunciation: [ˈlekko], locally [ˈlɛkko] ( listen); Lombard: Lecch [lɛk]) is a city of 48,131 inhabitants in Lombardy, northern Italy, 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Milan, the capital of the province of Lecco. It lies at the end of the south-eastern branch of Lake Como (the branch named Lake of Lecco / Lago di Lecco). The Bergamo Alps rise to the north and east, cut through by the Valsassina of which Lecco marks the southern end.

I must say that I am always concerned with the authenticity of excellent reviews of an activity that has many first time reviewers. But in this case I must agree with all the positive comments; this was a very informative and fun tour, given by a very passionate volunteer.
About 10 days before arriving in Lecco, I emailed the volunteer organization of the Campanile di San Nicolo, inquiring about an English tour for three women. I promptly heard back that they would try to locate a volunteer for the specific date we were in Lecco and could I please provide our names prior to the tour. A few days before our arrival I received the details; unfortunately an English guide wasn't available, however since two out of three ladies spoke Italian, we agreed on an Italian guide. Our guide was delightful, prompt and very happy to answer all our questions and wait while my friends translated. However, its worth knowing that there are many informative signs in English and I certainly understood a great deal even with translations.
Yes, there are lots of steps, but as other reviews indicate, they are taken in stages with time to catch your breath. We reached the bell tower level for spectacular views and had no problem hearing the bells ring at 11 am!!! From there its necessary to climb about 15 feet up a straight ladder, which some people might find difficult, but you are well rewarded with lovely unobstructed views and the satisfaction that you're made it to the top! Our tour was about 1 hour 1/2 ... we were slow and had lots of questions; don't think it usually lasts this long.
One of the big surprises mid-way up the tower, was an exhibition that is in progress ... a 4-5 foot reproduction of the Campanile tower made completely from Legos! It was just amazing and so detailed.
We thank the volunteer group for Campanile di San Nicolo and especially our excellent guide. This was a highlight of our trip and highly recommended!

If you're in the area and enjoy walking around in stunning scenery then this is the place for you. There's a nice cable car ride up the mountain and when you get out there are breathtaking views over Lecco and Lake Como. There are numerous viewpoints but if you're not a fan of heights then some of them will make you feel a little uneasy. They're not all like that though. There are a couple of places to eat however the veggie options are slim to none but that doesn't detract from the spectacular surroundings. We were only up there for a couple of hours at most but there are loads of walks through landscapes which are reminiscent of the Sound Of Music and you could easily spend a whole day or more there. Absolutely worth a visit!

This place is enjoyed by locals mainly or Italians, we didn't see any tourist but it was great because we enjoyed the locals habits, here you can walk along the side or do a bike ride or simply sit on one of the benches and enjoy some bread with cheese and ham like they all do here, very relaxing views and none bothers you, no annoying tourists around. Highly recommended.

A lovely walk by the lake with beautiful views of the Mountains on one side and the village on the other side. There's benches along the way to stop for a rest and if it's sunny there's trees so you will probably also find some shade. We saw swans along the way as well.

The best part of Lecco is definitely the walk along the lake, however the city centre is also very nice and the Dome with its square is a nice attraction to visit. The dome is not so famous as the Milan one, but I think it is worth pop inside to check it out.

The center is nice
You can walk in the evening and very nice.
There are many people and music from restaurants.
There are places to sit and drink for food.
Nice to sit in the evening and eat.
In general one can spend an hour or two enough.

After climbing for two hours through snow and ice we arrived at Rifugio Azzoni rather cold and hungry. To our surprise the Rifugio Azzoni served some great comfort food. We had rabbit and Italian sausage both served with polenta and washed down with some ice cold Italian beer! Absolutely perfect in preparation for the arduous decent which awaited us. However, before we could start our decent we had to climb the last bit to the landmark cross and take the "customary" photos to prove we actually made it :-) All in all a worthwhile experience even though we could not get full view of lake Lecco and surrounding areas due to the dense fog.
A good challenge and highly recommended!!

We has a few days in Lecco, and asked our hotel concierge for things to do. This is what she recommended based on our interest of nature, hiking, and great views, and untouristy. This was an easy hike once we were up on the mountain. Our 5 and 9 year old kids did it without complaining (they are fit and used to walking a lot). I think the great views helped, and my 5 year old daughter loved being in the "cloud". In the morning it was quite cloudy and foggy, but once it cleared the views could not be beat. If you go in the morning take a jacket as it was quite chilly, even in July.

The ancient Palazzo Belgiojoso (XVIII century) hosts three FREE Museums:
* The Natural History Museum
* The Historical Museum
* The Archaeological Museum
You can look at different species of stuffed animals: birds, fishes, insects and others animals.
Inside the Historical Museum you can also find an interesting Industrial Multimedia room explaining the history of industry in Lecco.
In the Archaeological Museum it is also preserved an ancient Menhir dating back to the Copper Age
Recommended for families with children!

It's a nice place but not something to have on top of your list if you do not know who Alessandro Manzoni was. The place and the entrance can be hard to find especially since there are no signs. Also, it's a pitty you cannot visit the Gardens.
Even if we were the only visitors the guide was very nice and helpful. We certainly plan to read "The Betrothed" now :)
