A restored, 1880s frontier synagogue in historic Leadville. The only building of its kind west of the Mississippi, it now houses a museum dedicated to the Jewish pioneers of a booming mining city. Come visit Temple Israel to learn more about a vibrant community that supported an active civic and social world whilst satisfying the city's commercial needs.
Don't miss! Had visited years ago, and had some people staying with me from back East who were interested in history. So, I took them to Leadville. Called in advance to be sure they would be open, and as luck would have it, got Mr. Korn to show us around. He is the one you want to have give you a tour; he is a font of knowledge about Leadville, the building, the reconstruction of the building, the historic cemetery, and more. This is worth a stop if you are anywhere nearby, or worth a little day trip if you are in Eagle or Summit County for a visit. Be sure to go by the nearby historic cemetery if weather permits.

Every turn of this highway brought breathtaking views. Do take the side drive to twin lakes, if you want spectacular postcard photos, this is the place to get them, the lakes with the mountains behind are lovely. This is a beautiful drive, along good roads, with plenty of scenic stopoffs. You cross the Continental divide. We drove from Colorado Springs to Buena Vista, up to Vail and then back past Breckenrige. It is a full day of driving, but full of natural beauty.

Please be aware that we offer SURFACE tours of the mine site. Tours DO NOT take you down into the mine, which is too dangerous to enter. Tours focus on the history of the Tabor family and mining in Leadville. Guided tours ($12 for adults) are offered at noon, 1, 2, and 3, while self-guided tours ($6 for adults) can be taken anytime from 11 until 4:30. Cash only at the site, but tickets can be purchased online or at the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum with credit cards.
Our visit to Matchless Mine was so much better than I anticipated - I highly recommend it! Our tour guide, Brenda, was incredible. Hand's down the best tour guide I've ever had the pleasure of meeting! She captured our imagination and introduced us to the people involved in the mine's (and region's) history in an engaging and captivating way. Her energy and passion for the tale was infectious and stirring! Thank you, Brenda!
