The Espace Horloger in Le Sentier uses the latest interactive techniques to introduce visitors to the secrets of time. In this museum, complication watches, historical objects and virtual installations teach visitors about the various trades and the history of watch-making in the Joux Valley. Learn about the history of the Swiss watch and one of the regions that established its reputation. The Espace Horloger begins its journey through time with an exhibition of the first complicated clocks and watches made in the Joux Valley. The visit continues in the old factory in Le Sentier where visitors are introduced to the technological secrets and various trades involved in watch-making. With “Ludotemps”, you can slip into the skin of a watch-maker and dismantle and assemble a watch, then wear it virtually. Large touch-screen tables present the various trades of this industry, an integral part of Swiss culture. Open from Tuesday to Sunday, the Espace Horloger puts on an original temporary exhibition featuring the different aspects of watch-making every year.
I went to this museum from Geneva. It took a couple of hours by train, each way, but it was well worth the trip. There is a short orientation film (in 3D, with glasses, yet). There is a floor with the excellent timepiece collection (with computer screen explanations in English, German and French). Reference is made to the crisis in the 1970's when it looked like quartz watches would make matchmaking obsolete. There is a lower floor with interactive screens on tables so the visitor can see how watches are made (and straps, etc.). Also on the lower floor is an exhibition of the watches of James Bond - one can see how Ian Fleming's character changed watches from Rolex to Omega and back and even (gasp) used a quartz watch for a while. The trip, by second class train, cost 83.60 Euro and involves 2 changes of train. If one misses a connection, the next train comes in an hour. The last connection, from Le Day to Sentier-Orient takes one up through very pretty country and, suddenly, one is in a small town with prestige watch names on buildings. There was one lady attendant in charge. She speaks English as well as French. I had arrived at 4:15PM (because of a missed connection) and she offered to keep open past the 5:30pm closing time, so I could see more if I wished. I wanted to make the 5:40pm train back to Geneva and it is a 10 mintue walk to the station so I declined - but what a nice gesture!
