Yume Samdong (Zero Point)

Reviewed By Koshkha - UK

There's really not an awful lot to do in Lachung but it's very clear that the main reason most people go is to see the Zero Point - effectively the mountainous 'end of the road' after which there's not a lot between you and the Chinese army. You'll need a car and a driver. If you've booked a tour and it wasn't listed on the inclusions, you may well get fleeced for quite a lot of money but once you've travelled all that way to get to Lachung, you're not going to say no.
We were probably one of the last cars to head to Zero Point on the day we went. We were at totally the wrong time of year to see the rhodedendrons, and we weren't the type to want to go Zorbing in the valley but by the time we hit the heights, most of the other cars were already coming back again. We drove as far as the driver was willing to risk his vehicle, marvelling that the snow on the roadsides really was BLUE. It was remarkable. But there came a point when the snow was too deep, the only car we'd passed in the previous 5 minutes had been broken down and so decided that 'discretion is the better part of valour' and turned back.
There's a stretch of road where locals sell hot drinks and snacks - or at least they did on the way up. On the way back we found two local ladies desperate for a lift back to the valley and we picked them up - and in return were rewarded with hot spicy chai and some chick pea snacks. Good fun.
As Europeans we're less excited by snow than most Indian tourists but I still found this a very charming trip.

Nathula Pass

Reviewed By pratibha_sa - Noida

It's not that simple to visit Nathula Pass. You need to plan and book atleast a day in advance. Your hotel or tour planner can do this easily for you. You need to provide an id proof and Rs 5000 for a taxi. Please note that you can not take your vehicle up there, you need a registered taxi that will be approved in the permit granted to you/your hotel or trip planner. You need to start early as there are timing restrictions. It's a beautiful ride, almost 2-3hrs offering gorgeous views of the valley. Since only limited number of vehicles are permitted upto Nathula Pass, almost 20 mins before Nathula Pass, the passengers of two cabs were shifted into one. Once you park the vehicle, you need to walk and climb a good number of stairs. Please note that the oxygen level is quite low at that level and you will feel short of breath. Though it was not snowing when we visited but the wind was absolutely chilly. Once you climb up and reach the pass, the feeling is great. You are right there at India- China border with China just a step away from the rope. You can see China's bunkers, the ancient Silk route and beautiful mountain ranges extending upto Bhutan and Tibet. The soldiers give you detailed brief of the area around and you feel proud of Army serving nation at such high altitude. On the way back to Gangtok, you can visit Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir and Tsongmo lake. A tiring day, well spent!!!

Reviewed By SanjayRJain - Mumbai, India

You may come across many Monasteries during your visit to Sikkim. This particular monastery is really good. Honestly I am through with my visit to Monasteries so I do not visit most of them but atleast one during my trip. This is a good one to visit.
