La Seu d'Urgell Cathedral

Reviewed By 487ALISONH - Harrogate, United Kingdom

Your entry ticket covers both the cathedral , the museum and the cloisters . These are which you see first ; the sense of peace and tranquillity is overwhelming . Don't miss the museum which houses many religious artefacts from churches around the region and displays explaining the techniques used to create medieval manuscripts , some restored murals and a collection of Madonnas and Child . Unfortunately the audio visual installation wasn't working but we had really come to admire the romanesque cathedral and its smaller chapel of St Michael . Restoration has been excellent and very little decoration made , which might detract from the wonderful architecture . The town has some ancient arcades , the palace of the Bishop , who is ex officio , one of the co-princes of Andorra . Its other attraction is the canal with artificial rapids constructed for the Barcelona Olympic canoe and kayak events , which still attracts exponents of those sports .

Fortaleza Castell de Ciutat

In the heart of the Pyrenees, 1 km away from the historic village of La Seu d'Urgell, the fortress of El Castell de Ciutat - Relais & Châteaux, has been the key setting of the region's history since before the IX century. Residence of the Counts of Urgell in the XI century, and occupied in later centuries for military purposes, still presents the traces of French invasions in its walls. In 1969 the family Tàpies acquires this property, former property of the Spanish Government, and renovated it as a space for celebration of social and corporate events, located few meters from the hotel. The ivy along the walls of the fortress' door, changes color according to the season. The views of the Sierra del Cadí and the Urgellet Valley are magnificent from the gardens of the Patio de Armas. Beautiful as well the enormous stones and clay floor inside the 10 meters height great room.
