What to do and see in La Gomera, Canary Islands: The Best Museums

July 3, 2021 Yuk Petri

One of the seven Canary Islands, sun-drenched Gomera is one of the less visited of this Atlantic archipelago. Offering the perfect escape, Gomera's attractions include dramatic beaches, trails through tropical mountain scenery and misty rainforest. Hike the mysterious Garajonay National Park or mountainous Cumbre de Chijere. Soak up the sun in scenic Valle Gran Rey or on Puerto de Santiago's pretty beach. Popular with the yachting crowd, Gomera is reached by air or ferry from the other Canaries.

After visiting the central church we noticed the sign to the local archaeological museum. For a small charge there were various rooms dedicated to the original inhabitants of La Gomera, their lifestyles, living conditions, diet, religion, medical complaints etc, Very well laid out and a nice way to spend an hour or two while the locals enjoy their siesta.

Centro de Visitantes del Parque Nacional del Garajonay

We visited the small museum, with fine displays explaining the traditional culture, fauna, virgin nature and flora in La Gomera. There’s also a small craft workshop. The owner cooks excellent traditional Gomerian cookies with local “gofio” (i.e.: flour of toasted cereals). This local Gomerian cookie is delicious and believed to be excellent for health! The botanic garden is wonderful and colourful!!!
