The most popular of all the jeep routes in Tajikistan is the Pamir Highway M41, equally be loved of cyclists (at least on the downhill stretches). Highlights of the road, which demands ten days of your time to see it in full, include the cosmopolitan town of Khorog with its suspension bridges, Afghan market, botanical garden and parks; ruby mines and naturally hot spring baths; groves of fruit trees amidst a patchwork of irrigated fields; and the stark and isolated, yet unforgettably beautiful, Murghab Plateau, where only nomads roam. The Pamir Highway grants visitors access to the Tajkistan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the wildlife and ancient archaeological remains of the Wakhan Corridor, and ultimately to neighbouring Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan. In a single day you can wind your way through high-altitude deserts, empty plains, and lush green meadows, frequently scattered with wildflowers.

Date of tour: September 2019. Booking process: Booking the tour was very easy. Alovaddin answered all my questions quickly, suggested an itinerary and adjusted it to suit our start/end points and flight times. Excellent service. Arrival and departure: Our guide( Zikriyo), and our driver (Sher) met us at the Uzbekistan border as planned. Easy to organise. At the end of the trip they took us to the airport at 4am. We were more than happy to get a taxi, but they insisted on driving us. Sums up their attitude throughout. Thanks Zikriyo and Sher. Tour: Superb tour. Our guide and driver were excellent. Our guide spoke good English, was very knowledgable and made the trip fun. We enjoyed talking to him about Tajikistan, its history, his life and family. Our trip included Penjikent, Shing Valley (7 lakes), Noffin, Marghib, Pskan (Yagnob valley), Saratog (Iskanderkul) and Dushanbe. A particular highlight was the short walk and overnight homestay in Pskan. The homestays and guesthouses were all comfortable, the food was good and plentiful. The length of travelling on each day was well planned. We had plenty of time to explore on the way and at the evening destination. It wasn't rushed so we could get the most of our trip, whether it was a bit of hiking, meeting the locals, or just relaxing as the sun set. Overall we had a wonderful trip, that showed off some of the best countryside that Tajikistan has to offer. Highly recommended. Thanks Alovaddin, Zikriyo and Sher!

Went on a private tour with my family, 6 of us in 2 four-wheel drives. Mas and Tahir were friendly, helpful and organised, and ensured that our trip went smoothly without a hitch. The hotel and restaurant bookings were part of the package. We tried the local cuisine, including horse milk! Mas and Tahir also prepared wonderful picnic lunches for us to enjoy in the valleys. Some of the lodgings were tied to unforgettable experiences such as horse riding through the mountainous areas of Chon Kemin. Staying in yurts was an eye-opening experience for sure. We were also very fortunate to watch the Nomadic Games, which attracted many locals in beautiful traditional outfits. I am in awe of the untouched beauty Kyrgyzstan has to offer (Jety Oguz, Issyk Kul) and will definitely want to visit Kyrgyzstan with Atlas’ experienced tour guide Mas.

4. 5 days tour from Tashkent to Almaty in Southern Kazakhstan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan Il'yas Otan

Shymkent is situated on a junction connecting Tashkent with Kazakhstan. Southern Kazakhstan’s Sufi heritage consists of the mausoleum of Yasawi towering out above Turkistan. Numerous other Sufi mausoleums dot the desert. Visit is not completed without seeing the ruins of Otrar and Sauran. Taraz and Zhambyl (Jambyl) oblast, medieval mausoleums, and parks sheltering tulips, birds, mountains and nomads hunting with Eagles in nearby town of Merki (Merke). Kazakhstan is a country the size of Europe - mountain and steppe, barely touched by modern civilization and whose inhabitants are mostly farmers. Its falconers continue the Central Asian tradition of flying golden eagles at hare for food and at fox for furs. During the Soviet period, many Kazakhs fled to Mongolia, bringing with them their tradition of hunting with eagles. Although, the Kazakh government has made efforts to lure the practitioners of these Kazakh traditions back to Kazakhstan, most Kazakhs have remained in Mongolia.

The palace is nicely maintained but a little underwhelming. As long as you are walking the old city it’s not the worst idea to take a look but keep your expectations in check.

I went to Kyrgyzstan (as a solo female traveler) for a 10 day tour with Datka Travel. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I had so much fun and learned so much about Kyrgyz culture. We travelled from Bishkek to Tulpar Kul –– visiting many towns and stunning glacial lakes in between. We ate the most delicious food (I'm even vegetarian and always had plenty to eat); we went horseback riding and hiking; and we met the most generous and kind families. I would 200% recommend booking travel with Emirlan and Talgat at Datka Travel. They are very knowledgeable, kind, trustworthy and extremely accommodating.

7. Tour to medieval Burana Tower (UNESCO Heritage)

Ala-Too Square, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Bex

The Burana tower is the 11th-century minaret which was part of the old ancient city Balasagun, capital of Karakhanid empire. You can have a great short trip to this archaeological and cultural heritage of Kyrgyzstan with beautiful sight from the top of the tower. The minaret is 25 meters tall placed on the absolutely beautiful location surrounded by green fields and majestic Tian-Shan mountains. It is possible to climb to the top of the tower by a steep, spiraling staircase and enjoy an amazing view of mountains and countryside. Also near the tower, you can see a small collection of stone idols and petroglyphs scattered around the ground, which was collected from the ancient Turkic burial grounds of the Chui valley, the Issyk-Kul region, and the Tien Shan. These sculptures are monuments with carefully crafted features of the face, headgear, jewelry, hairstyles, weapons. Nearby museum of the Burana tower is a small but special depository of these places’ history.

I contacted BEX via email and the responses were very quick which I really appreciated. I arranged for a driver to pick us up at the Korday Border in Kazakhstan to drop us off at our hotel in Almaty - DoubleTree Almaty. We paid 2600 som in cash. Initially they sent me the driver information with the name, phone number, car type and license plate. Then they changed the driver the day before. On the day we crossed the border from Kyrgyzstan, I could not find our driver so I emailed BEX and they changed the driver yet again and we had to wait 10 minutes for him to show up. We were told the original driver got sick. The car they used was an older Mercedes but it was quite comfortable. The drive took 3.5 hours because there was some road construction. When we walked out to Korday, there were actually ALOT of drivers asking if we wanted to go to Almaty. We even had someone say he would take us for 10000 tenge which is quite a bit less than what we actually paid. So if you don't mind negotiating a bit, you can get a car pretty easily. However, if you want peace of mind, I would recommend BEX. When I contacted other companies, it was actually quite a bit more.
