We were visiting friends who are from Kuopio. Loved all the food stalls and bakeries. There was a very relaxed atmosphere and I will be definitely back.

Puijo tower is a must place when in Kuopio. We went in July on a sunny Sunday and there was no queue to the elevator. Downstairs you can buy some souvenirs and upstairs you can enjoy a nice view and a breeze :) There's even a restaurant if you are feeling hungry.

I have visited the Kuopio Museum several times with my four-year-old son but never alone. I must say that for children this museum provides a all-round outlook over Finnish wildlife and historical lifestyle.
Even though it is a quite a small museum, all the most common animals are shown in the first floor. In the third floor you can visit for example chimneyless smoke cabin and an old general store. All these belong to museum's permanent Exhibitions.
The temporal Exhibitions vary a lot. Recently there have been Exhibitions ranging from Finnish fashion and international scarves to local band Verjnuarmu and wedding theme. The most of the temporal Exhibitions serve something for everybody.
The best thing in Kuopio Museum, however, is that there is pretty often some action for children. For example last christmas there was a elf caching and humorous Exhibitions of animal chefs. And they have also a playroom for children.
Small shop is worth checking out if you look for something local and different ideas for souvenirs.

Few hundred meters away from Kuopio central market you can find Valkeisenlampi. Nice and small to take a walk or jog around. At the summertime scenery is very beautiful.

This museum reflects the building ideas of the first half of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th. There people can see home decorations samples including bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, kitchenwares, also tailor's house and pharmacy. Within the museum it is possible to enjoy the sounds installations, but only in Finnish. Most of all I liked provision of the brochure and map about the museum (possible to order in any languages) for easy orientation inside; and also a student discount. During the break between visiting different buildings it is possible to have a rest in a cozy cafe within museum territory :)

RIISA is one of the most notable Orthodox church museums in Europe. The purpose of RIISA is to preserve, study and display the centuries old and unique cultural heritage of the Orthodox Church of Finland. RIISA is a museum with a soul.
I really didn't know what to expect from this museum. I understood many Finnish are Lutheran and the concepts are very strong in their culture. This museum featured icons of older Orthodox churches especially from the former Finnish land of Karelia (now part of Russia). The Karelian people saved these relics when they had to leave their lands. I asked if any were bought when the USSR fell in the 80s because I had read that a lot of people made off with many religious artifacts but these were saved from an earlier time. The neatest thing happened when we were there. We actually met the daughters of one of the women pictured in the orthodox congregation of Karelia. They were interesting to talk to and so were the women who ran the check/gift shop counter and managed guests.

One of the most beautiful churches in Finland I think. It is quite simple but it has the feeling. You should visit this, it's right in the city center. After visiting the church you can sit on the park next to it and enjoy the looks of the church outside.
The most popular church in Kuopio to get married and very busy on summer Saturdays. Don't bother trying to get in if you are not invited into a wedding. Or crash someone's wedding and see it all live. :)
