Cape Hedo, located on the northernmost tip of Okinawa main island is well-known for being a spot where limestone caves more than 10,000 years old can be seen. Shining your torch through the dark cave around 15 meters under water, you will see plentiful limestones. At the end of the cave is an air dome where you can enjoy the sight of the limestone cave.

Yambaru National Park is located in the northern part of Okinawa Island. It was designated as the 33rd national park on September 15, 2016. This park features the largest subtropical laurel forest in Japan. Its diverse natural habitats were formed as a result of the geological processes that formed the Ryukyu Islands. A wide variety of endemic and rare flora and fauna such as the Okinawa Rail inhabit the area with limestone sea cliffs and karst topography and mangrove forests. It also features a cultural landscape with the thriving tradition of Yambaru, which is rooted by living in close harmony with such a natural environment. A variety of recreational activities such as tours of scenic spots, trekking, canoeing, spending time by the river, and scenic drives have been thriving in this magnificent subtropical nature. The Yambaru National Park offers places and opportunities for visitors to interact with wonderful nature.

We managed to locate the public area of the beach quite easily on our drive north towards Cape Hedo from Cape Manzamo. We simply parked at some parking lots along the road, walked up a few steps and there was the beautiful beach, free for all to enjoy but with few people in sight. There was no public toilet though. There were plenty of dead corals washed up on the sand. It is such a lovely beach that we ended up spending too much time there and missed going to Dai Sekirinzan Park which closes at 4pm.

Daisenkirinzan - a forested nature park with fantastic geological formations is a great place for children and adults to be free-spirited; allowing creativity to see what you want to see in the amazing rock formations. There are natural formations that look like a cat, a T-Rex, a gorilla, a crocodile; a place where you see what your eyes want you to see. The trails are clearly marked and easy to walk. There are thoughtful gestures like walking sticks/wooden staff and umbrellas provided by the park. The stone museum at the end of the walk is well curated and informative. The best part of this museum is that you can touch the exhibits.
