Seize the beautiful day on the Osumi Island of Yakushima-cho, covered in gorgeous and dense forest that’s said to have inspired the classic anime film Princess Mononoke. Frolic with native deer, red-bottomed monkeys and migratory sea turtles (as much as you can frolic with a turtle, anyway), while you breathe in the sweet scent of ancient Japanese cedar. Yakushima’s unique eco-system is simultaneously subtropical and subarctic, an environmental anomaly that only enhances the unique and special properties of the island.

YES Yakushima offer tours into the pristine forests of Yakushima and also a range of mountain hikes from the challenging coastal peaks to the sub-alpine central mountains. Our popular full day island tour takes visitors around the island's coastal road, calling by all the major sites as well as some of our lesser known favorite places. The tours are conducted in English and cater from individuals to large groups.

Beautiful cedar forests with some nice, well maintained trails, and a few trees to be found (with relatively easy access) that are over 2000 years old. Stunning all around, with trees and waterfalls and crystal clear streams.

Truly, green, magical place, where I was able to see small macaques and native yakushika deer in a verdant green moss forest.

Deer and macaque haven. Another harrowing drive but so worth it. The macaques do not move off as you approach so you have to drive around them. Stunning views all around. One of the best experiences I’ve had.

This is the Hirauchi Kaichuu Onsen, sometimes translated as the Hirauchi submarine hot spring. It is inundated by sea water during high tides and you need to know the tide schedule. Can you imagine falling asleep and then waking up to waves breaking over your body? I can. Hirauchi Kaichuu Onsen is an unmanned hot spring with an honour system payment that helps with the upkeep of the hot spring. It is beautiful both day and night, although one can get quite sunburned if staying for a while during the daytime. Standard attire is complete nudity while in the hot spring. There are no changing booths and wise bathers bring a plastic bag to put clothes in in case it starts to rain. These bags are left up the path beyond the high tide mark. It is enjoyable to bathe in the moonlight as the stars are beautiful to see if the moon is not too bright as there is no light pollution from nearby cities. Bring your own flashlights and plenty of drinking water. Please do not bring any glass bottles, and remember to take out everything you bring in. I would go again and again. Visited 3 and 4 December 2018.
