What to do and see in Konstanz, Baden-Wurttemberg: The Best Things to do

October 2, 2021 Hana Mouser

Lying on picturesque Lake Constance (or Bodensee in German), Konstanz has been a city since the first century AD, later gaining prominence as a religious center and then as the site of the only bridge crossing the Rhine River. The Old Town is one of Konstanz’s main attractions and is home to the city’s famed cathedral, originally dating from the 7th century. Due to a border anomaly, Konstanz lies on Switzerland’s land mass, and the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen is just a short walk away.

Old Town (Niederburg)

Konstanz really surprised me. It is a city which has all. Good climate, beautiful lake, mountains in the distance, lots of history and nationalities, good restaurants and bars and the old town is in the middle of all. Quite some parts are car free luckily. It contains cosy small streets with beautiful buildings and large squares and boulevard streets which are alive. Everything is well maintained and perfect to do on foot because it isn't very big. It is really worth the time to take a couple of hours and stroll through the old town. Most restaurants and night life are also located here. Trough an underground passage at the station you can easily walk to the dock and the Constanz Lake.

We rode the catamaran from Friedrichshafen to Constance. What a fun trip. We first went to the Zeppelin Museum and then rode the catamaran across Lake Constance arriving in Constance Harbour to view the The Imperia statue at the entrance of the harbour. We disembarked and had lunch at a nice little Pizza place and then walked around the beautiful little town. Got back in time for our return trip to Friedrichshafen. It was lovely!

Isle of Mainau

The almost-tropical island of Mainau features a magnificent garden at its center and an ancient castle, which was the former residence of the Knights of the Teutonic Order.

Mainau island is one of my favorite places... offer all in one: +good for kids with an amazing playground (it even has a water and rafts) and lots of places to climb), tracks to play with small ball, mini city with trains and a petting zoo, besides butterfly house +amazing scenery with the lake and the most beautiful flowers and even sequoias. You can even bath in the lake water or feed the ducks... I go every now and then and take always visitors and all love the place!

The architecture is very striking and the building is beautifully maintained. An interesting insight into the religious history that helped shape this part of Germany.

Lake Konstanz, of course also located at the city of Konstanz is a huge and magnificent lake. On the south sight you have the Alps and on the Northside you have beautiful green hills with a lot of vineyards. To the east is Austria, to the south is Swiss and to the west and north you have Germany. Some beautiful towns worth visiting are Konstanz, Meersburg and Lindau. There are a lot of ferries between the cities located at the coast of the Konstanz Lake (Bodensee). Lake is also ideal for swimming.

Imperia

Reviewed By ralbrunn76 - Opfikon, Switzerland

We were many times at the harbor of Constance. It attracts the attention, it revolves once every few minutes and shows a seducing woman, which carries a man in each hand, one a pope and other an emperor. the statue refers to a short story by Balzac, La Belle Impéria. The story is a harsh satire of the Catholic clergy's morals , according to Wikipedia.
