The Kansai region (関西地方, Kansai-chihō) or the Kinki region (近畿地方, Kinki-chihō) lies in the southern-central region of Japan's main island Honshū. The region includes the prefectures of Mie, Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyōgo and Shiga, sometimes Fukui, Tokushima and Tottori. While the use of the terms "Kansai" and "Kinki" have changed over history, in most modern contexts the use of the two terms is interchangeable. The urban region of Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto (Keihanshin region) is the second-most populated in Japan after the Greater Tokyo Area.

This, hands down, was my favorite experience on our trip to Tokyo/Kyoto. I had emailed ahead of time to try to book a class. All of them were full, so I asked if I could be added to one or just go in and watch a class. The folks at the Kyoto studio were kind enough to open up a new class for me and my husband. Taiko drumming turns out to be a mix of all the things I love. It is musical and physical. The instructor, Kaede Bande, was amazing. She is a talented drummer and teacher: funny, energetic and patient. If you take one of these classes be prepared to laugh and sweat! What could be better? If you have a chance to take this class, do it!!! Loved it!

This was recommended by our travel company and I am so glad we booked it. It was an awesome experience for our family of 5. Kids ages 5, 8 and 11 all loved it. From the ninja outfits, the excellent instructor ( a woman- love my daughters and son getting great female role models) through a nice variety of information about ninjas from weapons and stealth walking, the hand movements regarding strength and the willingness to take as many photos as we wanted. It didn’t feel rushed or touristy at all. It was such a nice change from temples and shopping. Thank you for a great memory. The only negative- not having a T-shirt in my sons size!!

Butoh is an avant-garde dance that was born in Japan in the 1950s. Expressing a Japanese physicality and spirituality, the unique style of Butoh was a fresh challenge to the dance aesthetics of the time, undermining them from the ground up. Since then, Butoh has had a lasting impact on the world of dance. Even now, Butoh enjoys especially high recognition abroad, but within Japan, information relating to Butoh is hard to come by, and the fact is that there are few venues where one can experience Butoh. Art Complex has revived an ancient Japanese storehouse-an intimate space limited to eight seats-which will be devoted to long-run Butoh performances, so that Kyoto becomes "the place" to see Butoh dance. Furthermore, we are creating a Butoh Web Portal that will serve as an international resource for information about Butoh.
I almost didn't blink the entire time. So intimate, so intense, so vivid, I've never seen anything like it. Really worth it if you enjoy the arts - especially for cutting edge and provocative tastes. What you don't realize is that this is a show for not more than 10 people - at all times we are just a few feet away from the actors and you are so close you can even see their sweat and hear their breath. It adds a whole new intense dimension to an already intense experience. Loved it.

I was tempted to Japan from Scotland by a surprisingly affordable airfare. Not a country I would have initially considered for a cycling holiday. Not wanting the hassle of bringing my own bike I opted for a bike hire and all roads led to Glowbalwheels. Even for me, a confirmed technophobe, everything from booking, payment, arrangements, bike pick-up etc. was straightforward and hassle free. I hired a road bike and it was ideal for my requirements, small frame in excellent condition. My 12 day route took me to Kyoto, around Lake Biwa, then a loop along the coasts of Mie and Wakayama. Usually staying a couple of nights (hostels and airb&B) in each location. Cycling in Japan was a revelation while the cities are a huge urban sprawl the countryside and coast is pure magic. All my concerns regarding language, food, traffic, costs were proved wrong. I would definitely do it all again and I have no qualms about recommending Globalwheeels, excellent service and a great bike.
