Naturist beach which is located on Slapton Sands, near Strete, south of Dartmouth. In 1944, it was the site of the World War II military exercise, Exercise Tiger.
This has been on the Bucket List since I first read about it a few years back. As you travel towards the village you see the inland nature reserve & then a car park with the Sherman Tank that was extracted from the sea by Ken and placed here as a memorial to all the lives lost on that fateful day in Apr 1944 that should have been a practice for D-Day. Very moving indeed because as you venture across the road you see the wide open sandy beach which was so peaceful on our visit & it’s hard to imagine why lives were lost . I understand there is a 2nd tank on the other end of the beach.

The striking Start Point Lighthouse is situated on one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English Coast, running sharply almost a mile into the sea on the south side of Start Bay between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth.
Stunning view from the car park, lovely walk along a properly surfaced road to the lighthouse then, as you round the headland, the great reveal. The lighthouse comes into view, right in front of you. very interesting tour guide, Hugh, lots of stories of the human endeavour of being a lighthouse keeper in the early days. Solitude, subsistence and tenacity. Finally, the reason for visiting, the light. Brilliant!!

A fun and interesting local history museum on the main street in Kingsbridge where you can discover the history of Kingsbridge and the South Hams. The museum is based in the old grammar school and you can still see the marks the pupils left. The museum has a large social history collection including our farm gallery, showing the importance of agriculture to the area as well as changing displays and exhibitions focusing on a variety of aspects of local life. The museum also has quizzes, trails and an activity table for children all year round, plus events throughout the year. Check out our Facebook page for more details about events.
Fascinating museum packed with unusual and interesting artifacts. Housed in an old Grammar School which in itself is also interesting, with original "graffiti" scored in the wooden panelling by former schoolboys. There is also a delightful garden with an exhibit of historic agricultural machinery housed under a covered barn. Volunteers lovingly maintain the equipment. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff too! Recommended.

The Sherman which was recovered from the sea nearby has been restored and preserved to provide a reminder of Exercise Tiger and to ensure that we remember those brave men of all sides who fought and died for their flag and cause.
