What to do and see in Kildare, Province of Leinster: The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

October 31, 2021 Matilde Konrad

Kildare (Irish: Cill Dara, meaning "church of the oak") is a town in County Kildare, Ireland. Its population of 8,412 (2011 Census) makes it the eighth largest town in County Kildare and the 55th largest in the state, with a growth rate of 8% since the 2006 census. Although Kildare gives its name to the county, Naas is the county town. The town lies on the R445, some 50 km (31 mi) west of Dublin – near enough for it to have become, despite being a regional centre in its own right, a commuter town for the capital.

We spent over two hours here earlier today. We opted for the family package with some add ons and went for the Tag Archery, Assault Course and Splat Master. The whole family had a fantastic day. We were reasonably prepared for all weathers and it was a "bit damp" to put it mildly but the adrenalin and non stop encouragement from the head marshal meant that we hardly noticed! Being based in Co. Kildare ourselves we are delighted that we found this adventure centre less than an hour's drive away and we will definitely be back (hopefully with better weather!) to try some of the other activities. Well done guys.

The huge chocolate squares I had with my excellent coffee. Due to Covid 19 restrictions you may enter and purchase take away products only so no time to sit and chat. Even so you are greeted with the lovely aroma of coffee and good food causing you to salivate. Maybe not everybody does but there is something about the smell of freshly ground coffee and the Barista banging away the old grinds and preparing a new cup of coffee for you. Inside as you wait in a small queue (3 meters apart and all that) you get a lovely sense of peace and calm minus the buzz of people sitting and eating etc. While it is strange to go to a coffee shop and do take away food and drink it is still a lovely experience. Added to the eternal patience of the staff and it is not easy to understand us customers in our masks no matter how trendy some of them are. Questions regarding Gluten Free products are welcome and unlike a lot of coffee shops they have a good range so my wife was more than happy. Your cake is put into a nice little square box not a shiny plastic one. More classy I think myself and it makes you feel like you had a better experience than coffee at a Petrol station on the motorway. There are a few seats scattered around on the street outside and it is a nice place to sit on an Autumnal day watching the buses come in and go out and people pushing buggies with babies and normal life going on. Yes there is nothing square about this coffee shop. Good food, coffee, friendly staff and great service.

I can't recommend this place highly enough.I called ahead to book the virtual reality Legends of Kildare experience for a group of 27 primary school children. Tom,Emma, Luke, Paddy and PJ ensured we had a top class tour.We rotated 3 groups between the VR experience, a tour of St Brigid's Cathedral and a climb up St Brigid's Tower. All were informative and particularly interesting as we uncovered that there is so much to be discovered in Kildare town...in fact we are sure that we will have to book another day to experience all it has to offer. In addition,we were thrilled to be able to fit in a visit to the modern well-stocked Kildare Library to view an exhibition entitled " The Book of Kildare" by artist and calligrapher Josephine Hardiman, the children tried calligraphy and examined Josephine's work which itself is no doubt a piece of history in the making. The amount of information Tom in the tourist office had to offer about Kildare town is wide-ranging. I will be spreading the word about this hidden gem! Thanks to all who helped us organise a great day for our pupils.I would love to see year round access to the Cathedral and Tower as it could be guaranteed to draw thousands of tourists to further cement Kildare's place on the map! A must-visit place! Thanks all Helen

I went to Kildare village knowing what it was about, having visited in the past. It is an experience place to go to. I went with the idea of not buying anything, but with the value ended up purchasing a bit. Starbucks has a great variety of drinks especially over the xmas season. I was disappointed to see "Jack Wills" had departed, as was one of my favourite previous shops to visit. The staff, guides and covid officers are pleasant and helpful. There is a variety of shops and alternate ranges to pick from. Ralph Lauren, Superdry, Molton Brown, Joules, Calvin Klein & Nike to name but just a few. My advice for lunch: Just beyond the perimeter near tesco there is an Italian restaurant called YOLO (you only live once) and I would highly recommend when hungry.
