Bishop Hill is a historical throwback to Little House on the Prairie with museums, historical buildings, artisans, restaurants where the people dress in period clothing from 1860, when the town was established by Swedish immigrants.
Weekends include old time baseball games, pottery making, broom making, quilting, black smithing demonstrations. The town has multiple museums that tell the story of life on the prairie 150 years ago.
Swedish restaurants, bakeries and taverns with wonderful dishes make it easy to plan a day trip back in time.

Our Camping Club recently visited the Ryan Round Barn in Kewanee, Illinois. It was constructed by Dr. Laurence Ryan in 1910 for his Black Angus cattle, imported from Scotland. Dr. Ryan was born in the 1860's and enjoyed a reputation as an international brain surgeon and also was a pioneer in plastic surgery. The barn was completed in 1910 at a cost of $9600 and is a true round barn. It is 85-feet in diameter and 90-foot high to the cupola. The horizontal siding is made of pine and was said to have been soaked overnight in a nearby pond in order to be made pliable enough to bend onto the convex exterior wall. The loft is capable of holding 250 tons of loose hay. Today the barn houses a large display of antique machinery and other artifacts of farm days past. The barn was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places on December 31, 1974. Our group thoroughly enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it to others. The admission was $2-3 per person.

It's a tradition here in Kewanee to visit Francis Park on the 4th of July. There's pie and craft vendors, and did I mention PIE? Those Presbyterian Ladies sure can bake.

Many people visiting Bishop Hill often overlook this museum since it's off the main road a few blocks. It's a shame since it provides a good amount of history of not only Bishop Hill but all of Henry County. Located in the former school building there's exhibits on the area farming, county military history, education, and much more. For a county that is mainly rural there is a lot to see here and this is a good stop before visiting the colony!!

I don't even know for how long this store has been in business ... long time! Over forty years, I think.
It is a very attractive, nicely designed, family-owned quality furniture store. They sell quite a variety of different lines of furniture manufactured by different companies. Mainly, classical or vintage styles. The buildings and display rooms are spacious, and the layout of furniture is done professionally: customers are given a good idea how this or that collection (say, bedroom or sitting room set) will look and fit into a room. The interior design and flower decorations enhances the look of every item.
The restaurant downstairs is very good for lunch (delicious Rueben sandwich!), and a small boutique (clothes, seasonal items, jewelry) is like a post-dessert pleasure ... if you are not on a budget :). Parking is fairly easy, either on the street or behind the building.
I also think that the store does a great job doing the local TV ads -- that reminds, attracts and makes you visit this quality store.

This is not my first time at the Pioneer Club for food and drinks. They have been through some owner/management changes over the past four years and the folks running it now have continued to restore it to the way it has been for decades.
I own several businesses and three of them are restaurants with bars. So I have courteous expectations knowing the trials and tribulations owners and staff face daily. Food wise this place has a great niche. They serve food I would initially describe as CHUCK WAGON FAIR. I truly expect to see COOKIE or Hop Sing to come bounding out of the any moment. But surprisingly the owners have gone a different route. They have a team of young ladies that come from both sides of the tracks literately and together they all have learned to do every job in the place. Its actually working out real well. Now everyone can cook and/or serve, so they all know how to get it to you right.
Knowing the family personally I can attest to one fact- THEY WANT TO GET IT RIGHT EVERY TIME. But folks reality is sometimes things just go wrong in the process. I also know this, the last thing they want is anyone being disappointed so they are known for doing whatever it takes to make it right. Talk to them tell them right away, they are a family oriented bunch and they want your business and they want you happy. If your looking for something FAST then let them know, its not a fast food joint its a sit down family style restaurant but they can sling something together in a flash to take care of that rush if they know your in a hurry.
We often have business lunches & dinners there when we are in town and at times garner tables of as many as 20. Sure that puts the pinch on them but they always pull it off and in the mean time take care of their normal flow.
Recently they added 2 inches to my waist line by starting breakfast. My wife just loves Tana's biscuits and gravy and that monstrosity Pete created is going to cause my cardiologist to crack the whip on me for sure. Its not your wimpy breakfast menu. Really, its just about anything you can imagine done just the way you want. If they have it they will cook it fresh and if your still hungry just ask for more. THEIR NOT FOOLING AROUND get a great start to the day or a food coma.
There is no secret we eat at the other great spots in town too and have great things to say about them also. This is our family's favorite, we like the feeling of belonging there almost like we are part of their family. I would tell anyone reading this that if you like to relax in a place that would let you traverse the kitchen if your curious because they have nothing to hide and only want you served the safest meal possible then you should try the Pioneer Club.

A pleasant walk thru early Swedish Immigrant history of the area. Good knowledgeable docents who were friendly and willing to answer all questions. Located on several floors with no elevator so not recommended for persons with walking disabilities nor small children. No appointment needed but should try not to arrive at the same time as a tour bus.

There are at least five main hiking trails here (two of which use part of the old Sauk trail). Boating, fishing, and hunting (at certain seasons) are allowed here. Entry to the park is without charge.

Everything in this shop is handmade... a lot of colorful porcelain and custom pottery. I loved the handmade bowls with inspirational words around the rim and beautiful floral designs on the inside and the small "flower pillows" that hold water and flowers! They offer workshops, but I was there to browse and buy.
