The Great Rift Valley divides Kenya down the length of the country and we were driving in between those rifts at some point of time of our journey. It is home to big cats, elephants, Grevy’s zebras, and endangered Jackson’s hartebeests. Before the mud-road meets the highway at Loruk town, we made a small photo-stop at a viewpoint overlooking Lake Baringo – the freshwater lake known for different species of birds, crocodiles, and hippos. I love The main attractions of the Great Rift Valley the wonderful national parks and safari opportunities enabled by the wealth of wildlife.

Located just a few kilometers from Malindi town is this sandstone canyon Marafa depression. If you visit in the evening, the layer cake colors of the sandstone reveal hues of whites, pinks, oranges and deep crimson making the gorge so striking at sunset. There is a fable and a geological explanation of how it was formed, once you visit you’ll get to pick which one to believe. Excellent for a day trip when combined with other activities in Malindi.
