Visit us and experience a special elephant encounter which is suitable for young and old, families, couples and single travelers. This is your chance to get a memorable impression of a day in the life of a Sri Lankan captive elephant who is not being used for working nor riding. The small family run Elephant Freedom Project offers refuge, freedom from work and hardship to the elephant Nilame. At the project she is free from working in the riding industry and the wood logging. The Elephant Freedom Project aims to give Nilame a good and safe home, which is made possible thanks to your visit!
When choosing an elephant project around Kandy, you have quite a few different options.
The reason why we chose Elephant Freedom Project, was the fact that they didn't offer elephant riding. Instead, we walked, fed and washed the elephant.
We haven't visited any other orphanage, but this place really seems to care for the animals.
This was a great experience for both kids and adults. Our guide was very friendly
and knowledgeable and made our visit enjoyable.

Stopped here after the orphanage and had a great guide that took us round, we got to ride an elephant the correct way, we had lots of pictures taken with them and we had the chance to take a bath with one or as they describe it elephant shower, you get to sit on the back of the elephant and it fills its trunk with water and then squirts you which was fun. We also got to bath the elephant but do be aware that the water does contain elephant poop so you will need a good shower when you get in. We got the option to purchase elephant gifts including paper that is made from elephant poo, all proceeds go to the foundation. Our guide was amazing by not only taking some fabulous photographs of us but by also giving us lots of information on the project and about elephants in general. You get to see lots of bones and a full size skull of the animal. You can also buy a basket of fruit to feed the elephants if you wish. The only down side is that the mahouts are never happy with the tips you give them they always seem to want more and can be quite rude.

This is a place where you can enjoy an Elephant Ride. it is situated in a acres spread Rubber plantation. 3KM from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. A great place for nature and Elephant Photography
Great visit. We love elephants and genuinely believed that these animals are properly cared for. Whilst not their natural environment it allows elephants to experience something approaching that and as none could survive the wild it offers them a "least worst experience". We enjoyed watching the feeding and also the twice daily river visit.

This is wonderful place to have a half day trip with your family or frieinds.
I have been there for twice. First visit was with a group of friends on our way to Kandy. It was fun. we had long bath in the cool water. As it was a week day that was not crowded.
The next visit was with my familly and parents. as we had to walk jumping rock to rock , and that was difficult with the kids and parents we didn't reach to water fall. but we had nice swim and bath with the kids. That was great.
as this was a weekend the place had few groups and noisy.
on our return we took our lunch, rice and curries from a villedge outlet and meal was good.
the route : Head from Colombo along the Colombo – Kandy road to the Pasyala four-way junction and turn right to follow the Attanagalla road for around 4km. At Haggala junction, turn left onto the Algama road, pass through Algama and continue to Uduwaka where the fall can be found.

It's time to uncover the secrets of Sri Lanka. Why not start with a swim at a pristine, tropical beach, or get lost in an aromatic streetscape brimming with buzz and activity. Or explore jungle highlands, elephant sanctuaries and dense fields of tea.
'And Beyond' provided the guiding and driving service for our amazing 8 day trip which took our party of 9 from to Kandy, and back to Colombo. It was awesome! Our guide Mr Thissa was incredible he showed us things that we would never have found without him-Monitor Lizards, fruits, and Elephants; every restaurant we went to served excellent food and the staff were always welcoming. He arranged some really unique visits for us with highlights of the spice garden and the ox cart/boat ride/farm craft and Tuck tuck trip. He told us so much about the country's history and culture, and shared some jokes with us too. Sarak was our driver for the week, and his driving and kindness was amazing it was so lovely to meet him and Sunil as well who looked after our comfort on the bus all week. We feel we have made some great friends with our guide and driving team and would love to come back and see Sri Lanka with the team another time. THANKYOU ALL!
