On the banks of the Volga River, Kazan sits austerely, its cityscape a visual confection of architecture that somehow manages to be both playful and severe. No matter your spiritual inclination, you simply must visit the Temple of All Religions, a Technicolor cultural center built by artist Ildar Khanov. Though still a work in progress, the "temple" is a feast for the eyes—and the spirit.

“Smena” Center of Contemporary Culture is an independent institution that started in Kazan in 2013. It regularly hosts exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, publishes books, and holds major city events. For seven years the team of the Center has been forming an extensive program consisting of educational, popular science, educational and cultural events — exhibitions of contemporary art, screening of documentary and feature films, meetings with authors, lectures, and discussions. “Smena” also initiates studies of urban space and local history subjects — later they are published as books or exhibited in the Center’s gallery.
