Katunayake (කටුනායක in Sinhala, கட்டுநாயக்க in Tamil), is a suburb of Negombo city in Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is the site of Bandaranaike International Airport or Colombo Airport, the primary international air gateway to Sri Lanka. With the change of government in 1977 and the introduction of the open economy policy a large area was allocated to create a free trade zone (currently known as the Export Promotion Zone). This created a large amount of job opportunities for the local youth and has contributed substantially towards the country's economy.

Thanks to Leisure World Tours' chauffeur/tour guide Lal, my family and I had an unforgettable 11 day trip to Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Trinco, and Arugam Bay. It was a pleasure from the moment he picked us up until the moment he dropped us back home. When there was a problem or a moment of stress, he helped us sort it out immediately, and kindly helped me out. His main concern was that we have no stress and enjoy the trip. We saw so many beautiful, historical and special sites and buildings, and learned so much about Sri Lanka from our guide, it made me learn to appreciate the country all over again.
The Dambulla rock is 160m high and is surrounded by more than 80 documented caves. Five popular caves contain the major attractions, with several statues and paintings that are related to Buddha's life. These caves vary in sizes and magnificence. 4 statues of Gods and Goddesses, including one of Vishnu and Ganesha. King Walagamba converted the caves into a temple in the 1st century BCE. Exiled from Anuradhapura, he sought refuge here from South Indian invaders for 15 years. After reclaiming his capital, the King built a temple in thankful worship. Many other kings added to it later and by the 11th century, the caves had become a major religious centre. King Nissankamalla gilded the caves and added about 70 Buddha statues in 1190 AD. During the 18th century, the caves were restored and painted by the Kandyan Kings.

I went with my parents to Sri Lanka end of February for 10 days and we couldn’t have got a better tour guide (Amila): full of knowledge, well prepared and passionate about his country (and fluent in Spanish!). Amila gave us a suggested itinerary which we loved! Highly recommendable tour guide and country! We will definitely go back to Sri Lanka one day! Paula
Sri Lankan heritage and cultural tours focus mainly around “the cultural triangle”. The cultural triangle connects three ancient world heritage cities, namely Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy. Scattered within the cultural triangle are thousands of rural villages where authentic Sri Lankan culture mingles with many more mini heritage sites.
