What to do and see in Kassel, Hesse: The Best Things to do

February 27, 2022 Renato Branum

Dating from at least the 10th century, today Kassel is most famous internationally as the home of Documenta, an every-five-years exhibition of modern and contemporary art. In the late 17th century Kassel received a large influx of Huguenot refugees from France. During the 1800s, it became the capital of the Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tale Route. In 1943, the city was virtually razed by British bombers, leaving few old sights, but the 18th-century Wilhelmshöhe Castle overlooking the city remains.

During our stay in Frankfurt, we took an excursion to Kassel, the charming city of Grimm Brothers, famous German fairytale writers. After about 1.4 hour train ride from Frankfurt Hbf to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Bhf and a short taxi ride from the station, we arrived at the road side of Schloss Wilhelmshöhe (Wilhelmshohe Castle) inside Bergpark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a short walk, we arrived at the majestic Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. The castle was facing a breathtaking view of the vast and beautiful Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe with the tall Hercules Monument and its cascading water fall. After looking at the castle and admiring the beautiful view of the park from the castle front, we started walking toward the direction of Hercules Monument and Schloss Lowenberg (Lowenberg Castle). We spent about 2 hours walking around the beautiful park before returning to the place where our taxi dropped us off. Since there was no taxi stand around, we crossed the road and walked to the beautiful “SchlossHotel Bad Wilhelmshöhe”. The hotel’s receptionist kindly called a taxi for us. So, we took the taxi to return to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Bahnhof for our train to Eisnach for our visits to J.S. Bach’s Birth House and Schloss Wartburg where Martin Luther was hiding and translating New Testament. [Notes: (1) Kassel train station to visit Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is not Kassel Hauptbahnhof. (2) My review of Schloss Lowenberg would appear on Tripadvisor site as a separate review]

A world heritage site , definatly worth visiting, take the bus to the top and walk down, unless you are feeling really strong and need a good climb, the water only runs on certain days but with or without it’s worth the effort.

I went on a beautiful sunny day in August with my mom. Since she is not so good on food we started our afternoon at Wilhelmshöhe Castle and walked around there to see the big water fountain. The park is beautiful and well maintained and good to walk for older people or people in a wheel chair. i would recommend to go on weekdays. I found weekends are to crowded. We finished off with a nice cool Beer in the Park Hotel's Beer garden just beside the Castle. It was a nice afternoon and I will definitely go there again.
