Busy animal bazaar just outside Kashgar. They sell and buy all kinds of farm animals (horses, sheep, fat-tailed sheep, goats, camels, cows, yaks). There are also some butchers, where you can buy meat. If you are getting hungry you can get noodles or a kind of meat pie (like samsa) at some food stalls inside and outside the animal stock market. They do not treat their animals very good (depending on the type of animal more or less harsh). So this place might not be a good place to visit for everyone. We took a taxi to get there (we paid 30 CNY; hostel told us the normal price should be less) , but there is also a bus (#23). When you're outside the bazaar, turn left and walk up the road a bit, the bus leaves on the next crossing (300 m). Going back to kashgar you want the one on the bazaar side. I would not recommend to take the bus going there if you don't speak good chinese or uigur, as you cannot see the bazaar from the bus stop. Going back it's a good option, because the bus goes to the city center.

As legend has it, Xiang Fei was a concubine for the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty in the 18th century (reference: Wikipedia). According to this legend, the emperor had welcomed Xiang Fei to the imperial palace in Beijing, and she was known as the "Fragrant Concubine" because of the sweet scent her body naturally produced. Xiang Fei had lived in the Beijing imperial palace until her death, at which time her body was brought back to hometown, Kashgar. She is now entombed in the Xiang Fei (Abakh Hoja) Tomb. As can be seen from the attached photos, the garden area around the Tomb is a very large area and very beautifully landscaped. The Tomb itself is quite stunning on the outside and there is a picturesque water pond in front of the structure. Visitors are allowed inside the Tomb, and the area where Xiang Fei was supposedly laid to rest can be seen inside, as well as caskets for other important dignitaries. No photos were allowed inside the Tomb. Very interesting and lovely place to visit. It is quiet and peaceful visiting the Tomb.

This thriving bazaar hosts traders from all over Central Asia.
Most packed on Sunday's when over 200,000 people often attend, with shoulder to shoulder shoppers & sightseers. It has been famous for centuries, and was a major trading bazaar of the Silk Road. Lots of unique locally produced goods.

I've been living/traveling in China for 3 years and this was probably one of my favorite experiences. I loved getting to see a place so unique and different from the rest of china. I think I could've wandered the alleys of the old city forever. People watching was so much fun here. Definitely a must if you are in Kashgar!

Lots to see and do in the old district. We enjoyed the craftsmen displaying their skills which have been past on through centuries of generations. Interesting tasty street foods, and watching the locals in their daily lives.
