Railroad buffs in particular will enjoy a ride on this small train, which includes two stretches, the more scenic of which is Hakone Yumoto to Gora.
We chose the cable car on the way home as we caught the bus up the hill on the way in and didn’t get to experience the amazing greenery of sights up and down the mountain like you can on the cable car. It may add an extra half an hour to your trip down the mountain - but well worth it.

My suggestion is take the ropeway one way. Either up, or down. The ropeway is great but to see everything (like the buddha and temple) you must hike down. And if you are stubborn like me and bought a round trip ticket without knowing, you must hike all the way back up afterwards... by hike I mean walk up ALL the stairs. And there are many. But it was so worth it. I took the ferry from Kurihama over. Pretty awesome day trip.

After getting the train down from Tokyo, you pass through the turnstiles and use the pasimo card to get around. This train takes you along the bay to easy access for the giant Buddha.

The cable car is the steepest in Japan and is one of the three ways to go to Mt Takao. There’s a chairlift or people can also go to the top by walking. The cable car is 930¥ return or 480¥ one way. It takes less then 10 min. to go to the top. From there you need another short walk (depending on the weather, icy pathway in winter) where if you’re lucky will be greeted by an a,axing view of my Fuji and Tokyo. It’s an extremely popular hike for family so best to go during the week if you like peace and quiet. Highly recommend.

The lines for the cable car were too long so we took the chair lift both ways. The view coming down was awesome. Getting on and off is easy and lots of help is provided. Much better than walking.
