What to do and see in Johannesburg, Gauteng: The Best Private Tours

November 15, 2021 Augustus Redeker

Johannesburg is the place to go to mix big-city culture, shopping, dining and nightlife with outdoor adventures, up-close wildlife encounters and visits to historical sites. Explore caves and nature reserves, or visit a traditional village by day, then enjoy dinner at a hip cafe or five-star restaurant. And if you're a shopper, bring an extra, empty suitcase. With malls, open-air markets and places that blend the two, you'll find plenty of unique souvenirs.

My boyfriend and I did all our tours with Nic from Africa Moja Tours & Transfers-Cradle of Human Kind, Lesedi, Soweto, and Pretoria. We were very nervous booking tours as it was all last minute and we did not have a lot of time to research. However, our first day went so great with Nic that we booked another day. He is a very safe driver, incredibly knowledgeable and smart, and a great person to hang out with while touring the area. Nic and the tours were truly one of the highlights of our three week trip in South Africa and I would highly recommend using this company and Nic for your tours. I am so grateful we had an incredible experience on our first time visiting.

My mother and I were collected from the airport by Pastor. She was in a wheelchair due to a back problem. Pastor was polite, patient, helpful, and very interesting to chat with due to his knowledge of the country and region. He also took us back to the airport. At check-in, when I realized that I'd packed some disallowed items, I called him and he came straight back. Within 45 minutes, he'd delivered the items to my sister to deal with.

Why should travelers book this tour because Soweto represents the hard-fought struggle against apartheid . We look beyond the bloody legend of the 16 June uprising and behind the hardened face of resistance politics, to core of Soweto- its people. Soweto is about people leading their lives- working and commuting, celebrating and grieving. See the poverty of informal settlement shack and hostel in contrast with the upper class suburbs of Diepkloof in Soweto.

We originally had a tour scheduled to the lesedi cultural village but because of the coronavirus the lesedi cultural village is temporarily closed to visitors. As a result, Pastor, our guide, was very polite and professional. He wasted no time in getting in contact with us about the situation and offered us alternatives. Ultimately, we ended up going with a Taylor made tour to Pretoria and as we were really interested in experienceing some of the Zulu culture, he managed to create an experience for the two of us where we met a Zulu with traditional clothing. Although it was not the lesedi cultural village, Pastor pulled some strings and made sure we had a very memorable day. Pastor is a very polite and articulate young man. I would encourage you to consider booking with this company as you will be pleased.
