What to do and see in Jerez De La Frontera, Andalucia: The Best Outdoor Activities

May 6, 2022 Toi Mattera

Southwest of Seville, Jerez is a well-heeled place. It’s the home of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and its famous dancing horses; if you’re on a budget or can’t be there for a formal performance, it’s worth dropping in to catch a morning training session. The other major reason to visit Jerez is to sample its most famous product—sherry. You can do this at a number of bodegas associated with the world’s best-known brands, including Bodegas Tio Pepe, The House of Sandeman, Jerez, and Pedro Domecq. They’ll soon have you knowing your amontillado from your oloroso. There’s also an Alcázar, dating back to the time of the Almohads, which features a small mosque, now the chapel of Santa María Real.

We booked the Saturday tour and show online and the price was very reasonable for what we experienced on the day. Location is not that good to find with a SAT NAV, so take your time to plan your route if you are driving there. If you have printed off your online ticket confirmations with your seat numbers on, you do not need to queue at the ticket office, go directly to the attraction entrance and show your booking confirmations. Once inside you will be split into groups according to your language. Our guide was Vicky who was excellent. The tour explains the history of the stud farm and day to day running. You will be able to stroke the horses, as they are very calm and friendly. The horses are clearly very well cared for by the staff. The show takes place in the second half of the visit and was very good. There are toilet facilities, a shop for souvenirs and refreshments are available. There is no cafe or restaurant. I would highly recommend this attraction.

So I tend to pick quiet times, being a low handicapper and on my own, I tend to fly around. We went out on a very windy day, but playing links as my local club, I didn’t think it was too bad, but the wife did question my sanity. Uphill first, huge driving range to the left and we could somebody up, even tough we were told it was quiet and empty out there. No problem, they played quick. All the holes are fair but challenging, love the second par five downhill by a green protected by water to the right. By the 7th we had slowed to a snails pace, we got the first 7 completed leisurely in 1:15, it then took an hour to play 3 holes. No way was I going to take 3 hours to play another 9 holes, plus we noticed a large group come out and join the 10th, so it was the front 9 again, which is a real shame, next time.

This is a great golf course. The staff is friend, professsionel and helpful. The course is in a very good condition and well looked after. We had a great week and six great rounds of golf and would not hesitate to return and play some more great golf.
