It was quiet and peaceful. The park attendants were cheerful and very helpful. The park was very clean and the restrooms were nice! It was cool so the fish didn't bit as much as we had hoped for ,but it was November.

Trees were turning. We were just out for a drive, but it looks like a wonderful place for camping. They have shelters to rent, campsites and RV hookups, also canoe rentals.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Reviewed By YenkoOshima - Jasper, United States

This lake (the biggest lake fully surrounded by Texas land) is the major attraction for the Jasper, TX area. It is well-known for its bass fishing tournaments. It's a Army Corps of Engineers lake and all the parks are Corps. They have a check-in, $5 per adult fee, or you can get a $45 pass online. The southern side of the lake is the busiest. Ebenezer Park has the best beach, a view of the spillway, campsites with corrals, horse trails, and just happens to have a pretty display of native wildflowers in spring. Miller's Cove is the busiest, most popular park with lots of RV campsites, a boat ramp, a beach, a playground, and many trees close enough to hang a hammock. The best boat ramp is Twin Dikes Park with its huge parking lot made for trucks with long trailers. There's a private pavilion where bass tournaments are often held and a private, outdoorsy-ambiance resort next to the run down marina. Some new hotels, a gas station with large convenience store, and restaurants have been built near the lake (The Stump, Hamburger Depot) and have gained a good reputation. You can even pick up Sam Rayburn souvenirs at HD. The northern end of the lake is more shallow, further from civilization, and is more popular with crappie and white bass fishermen. Hanks Creek has a boat ramp, beach, and camping areas (which are usually closed during late fall/winter). This park is also close to the Angelina National Forest, which is a neat destination for photographing native plants of East Texas. This lake is one of three in close proximity: Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, and Steinhagen. It is in the middle of the Pineywoods Forest Region and you are sure to see towering pine trees! Jasper is 12 miles south of Lake Sam Rayburn (population ~8K). There are some decent restaurants, fast-food places, two grocery stores (Brookshire Bros & Walmart), two coffee shops, a few hardware stores (Lowes/Parker Bros/Harbor Freight/Tractor Supply). If you need tackle, there's Needmore Tackle on the southern end of the lake or Walmart in town. Huntington is on the NW end and San Augustine is on the NE end of the lake. They are much smaller towns than Jasper but do have some food options and gas stations. In between are tiny communities and lots of forest land. The beaches close after Labor Day (which is crazy, because it's still hot til November!). If you want to swim after that, you'll have to go to the private resort (they have day passes) or to the State Park on Lake Steinhagen. Yes, there are alligators. They are only occasionally seen on Sam Rayburn. Most of them live in Steinhagen or on the Angelina River below the dam, but they are not super plentiful, not aggressive, and keep away from humans. My husband and I have kayaked and swam in many places all around this area and had no problems. This is a fisherman's and naturalist's getaway! Bass fishing is excellent! Bald eagles fly overhead! The forest is endless. Just check the weather before you go out, it rains here a lot and is very hot & humid in summer. Always take a water bottle with you while adventuring!

This was our first trip to Lame Sam Rayburn, but will not be our last. The facilities were beautiful, clean and well maintained. They have Something for everyone. Relaxing at either pool was nice one could use some repair but did not affect our good time. The Golf at Rayburn Country was nice the staff are very accommodating. Had dinner on the patio at the club and it was great. Beautiful view and great food and service. We will be vacationing here again. Thanks for a wonderful time.
