The Big Duck

Reviewed By Alberto M - Yonkers, New York

I first saw the Big Duck over years ago as a child on my first ride out to Southampton in the early 1950s. My father had told me about it and of course I did not believe him, but he proved himself true to his word.

There was, truly, a big duck! AND there still is. And it's still ducky after 60 years.

We had a chance to drive out the Hamptons again recently and we got off the Montauk Highway (Route 27, the main road to SH) a bit early to take the detour around Riverhead and go through the Flanders area. The Big Duck was still there, as big and white as ever, and open for business and for tourists (we noticed three of the four cars parked had out of state license plates).

It's a famous place, famous as a tourist attraction and famous in the history of US highway art and design, as well as in the advertising and marketing world. The Big Duck is well worth a detour off the main road!

Clovis Point

Reviewed By DelMarVaJohn - Dover, Delaware

This winery specializes in very dry, French-style wines with prices that reflect that. Was attracted by the name: "Clovis point" is term given to the stone spear points used by the Native American Paleo-hunters who lived in this region about 10,000 to 16,000 years ago. Apparently no such points were found on the winery property, but a site from that era is located nearby. In any case, the wine my friend and I tried on a Friday afternoon were very dry as expected, but not really to our liking, especially given the $30 to $40 a bottle price range.

Macari Vineyards

Macari Vineyards & Winery, established in 1995, is family owned and operated with two tasting rooms and over 180 acres under vine. In the vineyard, the Macari family has strived to be on the cutting edge of viticulture, employing principles of environmentally friendly farming from the very beginning. Our Mattituck Tasting Room is open year round for winetastings. Wines are also available by the glass or bottle to enjoy in ourEstate Room or outside on our covered deck or picnic area. We offer cheeseplatters in season and light snacks are available in our gift shop.

Reviewed By Gabriel H - Bellaire, Texas, United States

This vineyard is located in an idyllic place, surrounded 360 degrees by vineyards. The Tasting room is housed in a new, modern building, with options to taste by the bar or sitting on a lovely terrace overlooking the vineyards. There are tables on the yard, next to the vineyards too, and Macari will organize group events and large group tastings. The Winery gift shop sells snacks, mostly chips and nuts, and next door you can purchase pizza, which is prepared fresh and can be enjoyed in the tasting area. Macari produces a number of white wines: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and a white blend; it also makes a blended Rose and several reds: Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot and several red blends. A sparkling wine and a couple of dessert wines complete the selection. We found the whites friendlier and more enjoyable than the reds, which while drinkable, are not competitive with those from the West Coast. This is a great place to spend a nice afternoon or to organize an event for the office or a group of friends.

Great place to visit especially with children. A bit pricey so take advantage of any discounts they may offer ie AAA, AARP, Senior Thursday etc. Sea lion, penguin, and otter shows. Colorful and well maintained tanks from small fish to sharks. Great Butterfly house and bird aviary. Worthwhile entertainment. Parking is plentiful but does require walking a few blocks to reach parking lots.

We've been going here for many years. Very Nice place. Our friend is a member and brought us here a few years ago for one of their festivals. We went with 8 friends. All adults in our 50's
We encountered 2 rules we were not ready for and were disappointed.
First rule: is we wanted to buy a bottle of Wine, open it, and sit somewhere Inside or outside. We were told we are NOT allowed open the bottle we just purchased,But, Instead, we could buy a glass of wine at the bar. No open Bottles??
Second rule: We Are not allowed to eat the snacks and food we brought with us, but you could purchase a small cheese platter there. Since it was early spring, perhaps they would have more choices available later in the year.
We then requested to Sample a specific wine and the woman behind the bar rudely said to her Co-Worker "just give them a drop". To which he complied. However,We did purchase several glasses of wine, finished them and quickly left to another winery.

Love this place. The tasting room isn't big but it's shaped like a sailboat and there's a decent amount of bar space. They have a great covered deck with lots of wine barrels and chairs and you can bring your own food while purchasing their wines. They even have live music. There's plenty of chairs and picnic tables off the deck as well. We did the VIP tasting they included 4 tastings and one full glass with cheese and crackers. The rose was especially good. I would recommend this place to everyone. The service was great and servers really knew their wines. Can't wait to go back.
