What to do and see in Italian Riviera, Liguria: The Best Natural History Museums
Liguria, or the Italian Riviera, boasts a bounty of beaches and resort towns, such as tiny but tony Portofino and stylish Rapallo. Hiking trails lead from Portofino to the villages of Cinque Terre. The Riviera of the Setting Sun runs north from Genoa to the French border. Connected by an extensive rail network, most towns make easy daytrips from one another. Il tratto di mare interessato dal Santuario è una porzione del Mediterraneo estremamente ricca di vita pelagica, e senz'altro la più importante dell'intero bacino per via delle popolazioni di cetacei che ospita.Dall'estate del 1988 l'Istituto Tethys inizia una serie di ricerche sui cetacei nei mari italiani, e in particolar modo nel bacino Corso-Liguro-Provenzale, da cui appare chiaramente, in termini di frequenza di avvistamento, la netta superiorità di quest'ultima regione sui restanti mari d'Italia. Nel 1992 viene effettuato un censimento sulla superficie del futuro Santuario da parte dell'Istituto Tethys, da Greenpeace e dall'Università di Barcellona, che consente la stima numerica delle stenelle (32.800 esemplari) e delle balenottere comuni (830 esemplari) presenti nella zona nel periodo estivo.

Established in 1867, the museum complex is known throughout the global scientific community for its four million specimens from all over the world. Its collections of high scientific value are primarily zoological, but also include plants, minerals, rocks and fossils. Deserving of a special mention are the ornithological collection, the collection of mammals, the rich collections of insects and the room dedicated to palaeontology.
