Having visited the castle last week, we returned yesterday evening to experience the Medieval Nights in the Castle. The fun started in the square with the court jester introducing the assembled "crowd" to the course of events. This started with my son's teenage girl friend being selected as a potential candidate for marriage to the victor of the night's proceedings only to be rejected for being "too smelly". Oh well... she seemed to enjoy the humour here and got to sword fight one of the Knights at the end of the evening anyway. And he eventually surrendered so she got her revenge. The most part of the evening was conducted in the inner courtyard of the castle. Once again I was particularly impressed with the passion and energy that all the actors put into their various performances. The sparks flying from the clashing metal swords during the many fights were certainly real enough! It's also rare that I get to go to a real witch trial and subsequent burning. One to add to the bucket list. In addition to the "show" you can also buy some of the local produce on display at a handful of tables in the courtyard. Nothing touristy here - genuine local produce. We bought some olive oil to add to our burgeoning collection on this holiday. At the end of the evening with the castle lit up, we had a chance to chat with some of the actors. On the Wednesday we were there, the audience was below the maximum of 150 people allowed during these days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Normally they could expect to entertain up to 300 people. We do hope that they continue to get great patronage here. Given the high commitment they certainly deserve it! And for 360 Kuna (under 50€) for four people (and a dog) we felt that we got an excellent evening of genuine, local entertainment.
