All of these magical islands have their own magical places and this is one of Bryher's. An attractive bay with a stunning sandy beach and clear but cold waters in which to bathe. Overlooks the ex-inhabited island of Samson and if you're lucky you may see seals swimming just off-shore.

The sub-tropical Abbey Garden is a glorious exception; a perennial Kew without the glass, home to thousands of exotic plants from around the world flourishing right here on the Isles of Scilly... Here off the coast of Cornwall, spring comes early, autumn stays late and winter hardly exists at all. Truly a subtropical paradise, Tresco Abbey Garden is brimming with plants that would stand no chance at all just 30 miles away on the Cornish mainland. The beautiful garden, built in the 19th century around the ruins of a Benedictine Abbey, is home to species from across the world’s Mediterranean climate zones, from Brazil to New Zealand and Burma to South Africa. It’s quite easy to while away a day meandering among sheltered glades of tree ferns or strolling along sunny terraces, gazing out across the borders to the ocean views beyond. Even non-gardeners cannot fail but wonder at the array of scents, sights and sounds that await around every corner.
We visited Tresco Abbey Garden as part of our cruise around the British Isles, and we were not disappointed! The garden are full of unusual and exotic plants, arranged beautifully on a series of terraces with wonderful glimpses across the bay from the top. Around every corner is an interesting vista, or a sculpture or pot of flowers. Even in September, when many gardens are winding down, there was plenty to see. A good restaurant and gift shop completed the visit. We loved it!

A vineyard offering self-guided tours and wine tastings. Self guided tours begin at our visitor centre and take you through the site and up to the top field with panoramic views out over the Eastern Isles before returning returning for al fresco wine tasting in front of the winery. The nine Vine Stops will introduce the site, the vines, the wine making techniques and the unique aspects of the site as well as some of the fauna and flora which call this vineyard their home. The wine tasting is an opportunity to try our still white and rose wines, created from the grapes you will have seen on your tour. There is the opportunity to buy the wine as well as our vineyard apple juice and other local produce at the end of your tour. Children and well behaved dogs welcome!
Thank you to Holly and her husband for allowing us to wander though the vineyard, the self guided tour was incredibly informative, topped off by being able to taste all their wines accompanied by some helpful tasting notes.

We always spend a fair amount of our two week holiday in these lovely gardens, primarily as the birds are so tame! Each year we visit, I make a point of completely emptying the large shell bird bath, giving it a good clean and then refilling it, as we know how important hygiene is to keeping birds that share birdbaths and feeders healthy. I do this just with the implements to hand. It's a delightful place to relax, enjoy the birds, flowers and quietness, taking a picnic lunch with you and remembering some brown bread and/or sultanas for the birds! Please top up the bird bath if it's low when you visit - watering cans and water butts are up the hill directly behind the bird bath. Birds need water as much for keeping their feathers in tip top condition, as they do for drinking, although obviously currently water for drinking is vital, whether at home or on St Mary's as birds are literally dying of thirst. If you can, please help collect some of the fallen palm leaves, and make a donation to help keep this beautiful garden open and enjoyed by all.
