What to do and see in Island of Hawaii, Hawaii (HI): The Best Flea & Street Markets

August 14, 2021 Phylicia Berquist

Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a quivering plate of fresh poke, followed by a fruity shave ice.

The Maku'u farmers market is my favorite on the Hilo side of the Big Island!! If good eats is what your craving, there is a variety of good eats to include thai, Mexican, Japanese, bbq, crepes, local favs, lots of vegetarian options, coffee and danishes, and desserts! If you ate looking for plants, look no further. Ive found rare plants like the peanut butter fruit tree, lemon eucalyptus, and moringa.fruit and veggie stands are endless with local papaya, avocado, breadfruit, breadfruit, mango, rambutan, durian, and many others! Let's talk sweets... my favorite honey vendor whose farm is on the southeast of the island. Nice guy, let's you sample the different varieties of honey from the bees that pollinate macadamia, lilikoi, and mango fields before purchasing. You can also find local art, jewelry, clothing, knick knacks, massage, and fresh coconuts here. Often times, there is live music in the dining areas. Open on sunday's only, lots of parking, $2 per car.

I love strolling on the paved parking lot, just being able to talk to the local vendors about growing orchids, herbs, etc. There is even a bakery with goods baked in a brick oven. Gotta try their cinnamon rolls. I buy all my produce for the week. Also beautiful orchids at half the price of a regular retail store. Need anthuriums or floral arrangement for a gift or for yourself. Great varieties available.

The fruit and veg vendors are quite knowledgeable about the degree of ripeness of their wares. We shopped here a number of times, and the perfectly ripe pineapple, mangoes, and other fruits were juicy and delicious. Bobby bought me a dainty blue pearl necklace from Hawaii Treasure Mill. The market has a few stalls of touristy tchotchkes, some selling fruit and veg that seemed to come from a warehouse, and a few offering clothes in addition to the jewelry stall. We always went to the same fruit vendor who was located on the west side of the market.
