Covering more than 1.3 million hectares the Innamincka Regional Reserve is quite unique. Set up to primarily protect the wetlands of Cooper Creek and Coongie Lakes it is different to most as it allows mining and gas exploration, grazing, conservation and recreation. In order to travel through to Coongie Lakes you need to have a permit which is obtainable from the Trading Post at Innamincka. It is a desolate and yet beautiful area. Where there is water there is life. Some fabulous spots to camp along the banks of Cooper Creek where our explorers once trekked. The first night in the area we camped at the reserve just a couple hundred metres from the township of Innamincka. It is an honesty box camp, $5 a night. There are drop toilets and lots of beautiful spots to choose from along the banks of Cooper Creek. We went out to Coongie Lakes on our second day and had a lovely nights camp beside the river all by ourselves. It was just amazing listening to the dingoes howl in the early morning and the number of birds were amazing.

We camped on 'The Common" for a week with friends. What a beautiful spot in the desert! The bird life was amazing, we fed up to 12 turtles each afternoon, watched hawks, little corellas, pelicans and went swimming each day, the river is not deep and has a sandy bottom. Met with very friendly other campers and they also have nice long drop toilet facilities along the camping area.
