Arts, entertainment, fashion, history and nature: Incheon has it all (and more)! The city is undergoing an extravagant real estate development, with a projected finish date of 2015. It also expects a large number of visitors for its 2014 Asian Games. Visitors can peruse designer shops in the Bupyeong district, enjoy events at the Arts Centre or discover local history at Liberty Park and Independence Memorial Hall. Head to the country's only official Chinatown for authentic cuisine and souvenirs. A ferry rides to the nearby islands is the perfect escape from the excitement of the city.

We had a 10-hour layover in Inchon Airport and discovered that they offer in-transit travelers a variety of tours of varying lengths to Seoul and other areas—even one to the North Korean border-- free of charge. We took advantage of this amazing opportunity and had a wonderful English-speaking guide who gave us much history and cultural background as we traveled through beautiful countryside and the outskirts of Seoul to Jeondeungsa Temple (oldest Buddhist Temple in Korea—built in the late 4th C—rebuilt 13th C). The grounds, with many small temples, shrines, and bells, were magical and the chanting of the monks generated such a peaceful atmosphere. There was also a lovely teahouse and gift shop. We also stopped at the Deokjinjin Fortress, a beautiful temple-like structure mounted high atop the cliffs, with amazing views of the river below. This structure was a strategic point of the outer castle wall used for defending the Ganghwa Straits during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), the French invasion (1866), and the American invasion (1871). If you ever find yourself with time in Inchon Airport, take advantage of this amazing opportunity!

We decided to stay in Seoul for two nights on our way home. Rather than carry heavy bags around the city we booked a hotel in Onseo which is close to the airport. We bought T-money cards at the airport which meant we could initially use the AREX all stop train to get to our hotel (10 minute journey). The next 2 days we used then AREX alll stop train to get in and out of Seoul from Onseo (40 minutes each way) and do all of our sightseeing. The T-money card could also be used on the subway so it meant getting around the city was easy, it is also very cheap. AREX was clean and quick with plenty of space for suitcases so it was perfect for us.

If you have a 12 hour layover, the airport has plenty to see. There is a small museum like shop as well. They have special events too; but maybe not now due to COVID19. Very well decorated. Shops were open; unlike Bangkok.

As well as making it easy to get around Bupyeong it has: Air conditioning, connected to the subway station with 2 lines, cheap clothes but mostly for females, cheap food court with coffee, juice, Chinese food, sushi and more. $5 phone cases, suitcases, cheap bags and handbags, passport photo service, lotteria, uniqlo, lotte mart, make-up shops, snack shops, socks and phone accessories. If any of this interests you or you just want to walk in somewhere air conditioned for a few hours, then check it out.

I have been to both the spa in the basement of incheon airport and the transit lounge in terminal 1. The big difference for me is that the spa (which costs $7 usd is located outside security. So if you have a long layover and want to leave then that is where you would want to go. This area does include hot tubs and other services for more money. But it is communal (not a private shower— many naked people all around you showering and freshening up). What I recommend much more to anyone is to use the transit lounge for long layovers. This lounge is only for those with long layovers and they will ask to see your ticket. But it’s right smack dab in the middle of terminal 1 on the upper floor. They have PRIVATE free showers (30 min time limit), a ”napzone” which includes a bunch of day beds in a darker lit room, a relax zone which was a bunch of people on their phones, and a “workzone” which as you can guess has a bunch of outlet and desk space. It’s so nice up there!! However, everyone I asked didn’t know where it was or that it existed. I did have to find this on my own. So the key is when you get off a flight with a long layover, don’t leave the airport. Instead follow the signs for transfer so you are still on the side passed security where the gates are. If you are super adventurous and want to spend your layover exploring, they do have free transit tours which means free tours to people who have long layovers. They leave the airport and they have a space to hold your bags or you can take them on the bus. The tour include places like shopping districts, temples, a cave tour, casino, etc. they are all at different times so if your layover is long enough you can go on more than one.
