June 24, 2021 Janean Rudisill

So close to Rio de Janeiro, yet so different, Ilha Grande is Brazil’s relaxing, undeveloped paradise. Stepping off the ferry to the island is to disconnect from the outside world. No cars, no banks (bring your money!), no ringing phones. It’s all about relaxing in the sun, sailing, swimming, disappearing into spas and reemerging for fresh seafood at one of the 30 small restaurants.

There were many issues with this tour, but, the main issues were, in tripadvisor, it says the tour is in "English" there was zero English spoken on that tour. Also, I was under the impression that I was going to have time to snorkel (since I paid an extra 25R for the mask (which I was also told would only be 20R via text) but you spend more time fighting for a life jacket, then fighting for a spot on the motor boat then fighting for a spot back then you do in the water. All 3 beaches combimed were a total of 30 maybe 45 minutes, if you take away the time it takes to get to the actual water. I also did not feel safe, as I was dropped off about 2 blocks away from my hotel (which had previously been passed) and I am a single woman in a foreign country and did not feel safe, why couldn't I be dropped off in front of my hotel at night?

The day started very early in ipanema. Our guide kako picked up in a very nice bus and the 3 hour drive to angra do rays started. Afger a short stop in a gas station for cofee we arrived to the marina where a specialized crew took us to ilha grande (the big island). Once we arrived to that incredible place we were handed snorkel masks and kako (our guide) even went as far as teaching us how to snorkel. He took our pictures both on top and undefwater which after 2 days he mailed us. In total we visited 4 diffefent spots at the island andnhad a bifet lunch. Also we made acouple of trails. The crew also treated us to some beer and caipirinhas. We even saw some turtles in the water and a star fish. Saddly it started raining and we had to get back. The experienced crew (a few sons of fishermen and the guide a sea biology student) were very courteous at all times, knowledgeable of many local stories and they were friendly in a way only brazilian people can be. (They are structured and professional yet informal and very friendly) It was a day both my wife katia and I will find very dificilt to forget.
