Shinetsu Trail

The Shin-etsu Trail runs for 80 kilometers along the border between Nagano and Niigata Prefectures, following the path of the Sekida Mountain ridge. The forests are perhaps best known for their beech trees. Tall, well-shaped beech trees form a corridor of green along the path. The packed-earth trail also makes for easy walking. Spring (from mid-June to the end of July) and autumn (from mid-September to the end of October) are especially good times to visit the trail. In spring, the last traces of snow can be seen among new greenery and flowers bursting into bloom. In the fall, hikers can enjoy the brilliant colors of autumn leaves. It takes 6 days 5 nights to hike the all the courses with accommodations. And it takes 5 days 4 nights with tent. It takes about 2hours from Tokyo to Iiyama (Closest Station) by bullet train. After having enjoyed trekking, you can go to Kyoto and Osaka via Kanazawa by bullet train and limited express. For more information, please feel free to contact us.

Madarao Mountain Resort

Madarao Kogen & Tangram Resorts in Iiyama City and the surrounding areas are more than just an increasingly popular ski resort area. Mount Madarao is located deep within the heart of the Japan Alps at the northernmost part of Nagano Prefecture, making it an excellent retreat during any of the four seasons.

We visited Madarao the first week of March 2019 with our kids aged 4 and 6. It was amazing for our week ski trip and I highly recommend it to others in a similar position. Our kids had never skied before and Madarao was great for them learning to ski. Wide open runs with beautiful powder snow so when they fell down they didnt get hurt and just laughed and tried again. They took ski school from North Nagano Outdoor Sports and in 2 days were skiing blue runs with mum and dad! There were zero lines for the lifts, so no waiting and getting cold. We had gorgeous blue skies during the day and snow overnight so just perfect conditions. There are plenty of places to hire gear and lots of great places to eat both on the mountain and very close by to the lifts etc. we had great pizza and awesome espresso coffee at Aki’s cafe, and a few good meals at the other on mountain restaurants too. The adults loved the intermediate and advanced runs including the tree runs and lots of fresh ungroomed powder tracks each day. We took the kids over to Tangram a couple of times as well on the all mountain pass for just 500yen extra ($6AUD) and they loved the kids snow park there which is much bigger and better than the one at Madarao. The adults also enjoyed some more advanced skiing at Tangram too. we stayed at the awesome Kuma Lodge right across the road from the beginner slope and lift access so it was very easy to access the resort. Overall a great resort. Not too many westerners and mostly Japanese skiers and snowboarders. There were lots of beginner snowboarders on the green runs so we steered away from them mostly! Such a great place for beginners especially I think, but a perfect balance for us between kids learning to ski and adults wanting more advanced runs and awesome snow! Very happy and the Kids in Adelaide team will definitely be back!
