It's only 45 minutes away from Harlem and yet it felt far away from the city. The walk along the Hudson shore is peaceful. All you hear is the river lapping gently onto the bedrock and nothing else. You can sit and watch Metro north trains go up and down across the Hudson. It's a very romantic place should you want to be with someone special. If not, it's perfect for a solo reflection time. There's a hiking trail that leads up to a plateau where you can see the Hudson from up top. Views are breath taking. I can only imagine how beautiful it would be in full fall foliage. Along the trail you will spot a few deers that look surprised by you and move along to their business.

Due to emergency repairs, the access road to the Park's main parking lot is temporarily closed to vehicular traffic. The upper parking lot is open with pedestrian-only access along the road to the waterfront, trailhead and bathrooms.
I came with a friend to this park on a December weekday late afternoon. When I was here, admission was free. It can be hard to get parking on a weekend, but it was relatively empty on a weekday. There are many options on elevation; I crossed steep hills and flat lands. The views of the mountains, the Hudson River, the foliage, the birds, and the skyline of Westchester County were outrageous! Strangely, though, I did see quite a few fish dead fish along the trail.

My wife and I hiked the 2 hour section of the Breakneck trail. It was challenging for us, but we did it. Not bad for a 47 and 52 year old! We saw people bring dogs on this trail which I thought might be tough for them with all of the climbing over rocks for a good part of the hike up the mountain. This might not be good for very young kids either. Bring water and snacks! And hopefully you are ok with heights! There were a few spots where I felt a little uneasy and my wife and I are experienced hikers.

Just 45 minutes away from Poughkeepsie, and you’re in this beautiful place, with lots of nature, a beautiful lake - with a beach! Picnic areas, and scenery everywhere! Tranquil water where you can use a kayak or paddle boat-rent or bring your own... just wonderful !!! $10 a car - well worth the trip and price!! Dogs are allowed but not in the beach or designated picnic areas, however - so many other places for picnic with tables and grills you can use (bring your charcoals) - so not problem here. Beautiful!
