What to do and see in Huatulco, Oaxaca: The Best Things to do Good for Big Groups

September 18, 2021 Lashaunda Abraham

With nine bays and 36 beaches, Huatulco is ideal for anyone who loves the sun. It's not an overdeveloped resort town, but the hotels are comfortable—even luxurious. Ecotourism is gaining in popularity, so take a break from sunbathing and try river rafting or a hike through the jungle.

Crisanto Carmona Sport Fishing & Bay Tours

Sport fishing is my passion, and I have been lucky enough to turn it into a career. I have been fishing for over 15 years in the Huatulco area and have had the opportunity to catch some amazing fish, smaller varieties such as Bonito and Tuna, to much larger trophy fish; Mahi Mahi, Blue Marlin and Sailfish.

Finding Hector was a bit of a chore as we kept missing each other, but in the end it was all very well worth it. As it ended up, it was just our family ( 4 of us), Hector and the Captain. It was my 2 year old son's first boat ride and he loved it. Hector provided commentary in both English and Spanish for my wife and kids. We dove and snorkeled 2 sites, El Violin and El Entrego. Both were great sites with lots of fish, eels and coral and even got to see a couple of Hawksbill Turtles! Our first dive included a mid sized cave near the cliffs, which was pretty cool! Hector is super knowledgeable about the whole area under the sea and above it and provide some great anecdotes on the past and present of the Huatulco Bays. Can't wait to go back and dive w/Hector again!

Bahia de Cacaluta

This beach was beautiful and calm and well worth the 3-kilometer walk through the jungle to get there. When we were there (December 2018), the taxi driver knew right where to drop us at the trail entrance, and there were security people there to give directions (in Spanish only) and a person offering rides for hire (we walked instead). Directions weren't too necessary - there's just one left turn you need to make on the path, so we were grateful the man had told us about it, but we'd have probably figured it out. There were a couple of little eateries on the beach and a port-a-potty, so some services seem to have been added since prior reviews. It was lovely to sit and swim and watch the water. The only disappointment is that we'd read this was a beach the boats regularly bring snorkelers to and we didn't find any interesting snorkeling. However, visiting La Entrega after made up for it!

This was my first class with Jane (Juanita) and I would recommend it to any food lovers visiting Huatulco. She offers several classes; this one focused on seafood. We tried some really fun and different things, such as cooking shrimp in a toaster oven, and adding mayonnaise and apples to ceviche (both were great). I loved that there were lots of hands-on activities—this is definitely not a “sit back and watch” class. I also really liked that we learned a bit about the history of the region as we cooked. Jane moved here from Canada many years ago and knows so much about the area. At the end, we enjoyed the tasty results on a bright yellow table on a flower-fringed patio. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning. Note: The school is about a half-hour drive from the main hotel/condo/marina area in Santa Cruz Huatulco, but you don’t need a car; Jane arranges taxis for any guests who need transportation. I’d advise taking her up on that even if you have a car, as the school is on a narrow road that I suspect is tricky to find even with a GPS.

Alfredo picked us up from the port for a trip in his cool, custom VW van!! Terrific start, he shared about the his city with great enthusiasm as we drove a short distance to his amazing kitchen for his Fiesta class. Immediately we began prepping vegetable, making soups and learning about foods we were not familiar with. We made tortillas, guacamole, 3 different salsas, etc etc. After all our cooking, about an hour, that was so much fun we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labors and his lovely table along with delicious margaritas. Alfredo is the perfect host, do yourself a favor and try this experience!!!
