What to do and see in Howth, Province of Leinster: The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

November 7, 2021 Agatha Simes

Howth (/ˈhoʊθ/; Irish: Binn Éadair, meaning "Éadar's peak") is a village and outer suburb of Dublin, Ireland. The district occupies the greater part of the peninsula of Howth Head, forming the northern boundary of Dublin Bay. Originally just a small fishing village, Howth with its surrounding once-rural district is now a busy suburb of Dublin, with a mix of dense residential development, quarries and wild hillside. The only neighbouring district on land is Sutton. Howth is also home to one of the oldest occupied buildings in Ireland, Howth Castle. It has been the site of filming for many films.

Hurdy Gurdy Museum of Vintage Radio

Joe & Tony made me very welcome on my visit to this curious museum. Housed in a historic Martello Tower from the early 19th Century this exhibition is crammed with artefacts telling the story of the early development of telegraph and radio. And there are stories to be told about each one! The two guides delighted in picking out objects of interest and recounting their tales. Whilst tiny, you can spend a happy hour or so poking around the collection. Sadly the building needs some attention and I hope the Council who own it are able to fix it for people to enjoy this characterful collection for many years to come.

Visited the Abbey Tavern for a family evening meal. Found the food and staff to be first class as always. The Christmas spirit is certainly alive and well with the fantastic decorations and lovely background Christmas music. Great spot that we would recommend to all. In addition they are very COVID compliant which made for a safe and relaxing atmosphere.

Fantastic hidden gem to be discovered. Bare in mind that this museum receives minimal funding and is volunteer run. Any issues with lighting etc will be solved with the public’s support. The history and stories captured by these vehicles are something we must ensure survives.

The Summit Inn

While visiting home to howth from Scotland, we took a walk on the cliffs and stopped for a bite to eat. The food was lovely, much better value than anywhere else we had eaten in howth and the portions extremely generous. Lovely Caesar salad, soup and nachos, other food we saw also looked great. The absolute cherry on top though was the staff, friendly and helpful. The lovely Oisin is an absolute credit to the business, I would happily have packed him up and taken him back to Scotland. His friendly banter and Guinness tips made our lunch a real pleasure. A real gem to find in the hospitality trade. Look forward to our next visit
