The centerpiece of the resort is The Black Pearl, Roatan’s first and only golf course. This 18-hole, par-72, 7200 yard championship golf course was created by world famous golf course architect Pete Dye. The course starts at the ocean’s doorstep, rises into the island’s rolling foothills, then takes golfers on a wild ride back to the seaside clubhouse. It features one of Dye’s signature island greens, and 14 holes offer stunning vistas of the ocean and the Meso-American Barrier Reef. The Black Pearl is not only a haven for golfers, but for the vast wildlife on Roatan as well. With more than 100,000 plants and trees, the golf course is one of the largest sanctuaries of plant and animal life on the island. This eco-friendly golf course is one of only a few golf courses in the world to use a special strain of grass called Seashore Paspalum. Dye Designs were pioneers of the use of this salt-water tolerant strand for tropics-based projects, known for its environmental compatibility, ease of irrigation and maintenance, and translucent green hue. Its appearance, juxtaposed against the turquoise Caribbean waters, inspired The Black Pearl’s tagline: “The Best Greens and the Best Blues.” The Black Pearl also features state of the art practice facilities including a lighted driving range, ocean front warm-up range, and a practice chipping green designed to create an atmosphere of game-improvement, one that encourages guests and residents to enhance their skill sets while honing their games on one of the region’s most playable layouts. This is a semi-private course with a myriad of membership options available including temporary resident memberships, corporate and executive memberships, and yearly memberships. The Black Pearl is a world-class golf course that perfectly complements Pristine Bay’s luxury resort and real estate options.
We were unable to get any response from the course via email or Whatsapp so the place we were staying in Roatan got in touch with them and set us up for a 10:30 t time for 100 pp. The clubhouse and pro shop are very nice but basically closed. No food or drinks and the top notch pool is closed and basically everything is shut down. They have a fridge behind the check in desk and that’s it. Two guys checked us in and went to get our rental clubs and cart and then we followed him to number one down a street then a muddy dirt path where we slid around a bit and finally to the tee box. Having met Pete Dye in Edmond Oklahoma a few times and even bird hunted with him, I told my girlfriend he must be ashamed to have his name on this course but then you get to see it. It’s top notch and besides the rough and bunkers needing work, it’s in fabulous condition. The tees are near perfect and the greens were a 10 out of 10 and rolling about 14 on the stimp meter. Possibly the best greens I have played this year and I play a few times every week. The bunkers all have been taken over by grass and weeds but they are working on them and the rough needed mowed here and there but all in all, the course is in great shape. They have about a dozen guys working all over the course and working hard trying to get it in shape after COVID and hoping for more players and thus much needed cash. The driving range looks like it hasn’t been used in a year and is currently closed. The guy that checked us in came and checked on us about every few holes and we even bought a dozen balls from him for 20 bucks and we needed them!!! In typical Pete Dye fashion, this is a tough golf course. There is not a flat lie anywhere in the fairways and the greens are elevated and rolling all over the place. It reminds me of Pete’s Kiawah Island course or Oak Tree National in my hometown of Edmond. Two of the toughest courses on the planet. This is a great golf course and I highly recommend it for anyone. Just don’t expect great service or drinks and lunch or dinner after the round or anything like you would normally expect at a top notch facility like this is. They have been hit hard by COVID just like everyone else but they have kept the course in as good a shape as possible without any funds coming in since March and I think they have done a spectacular job keeping it in great shape and they are working hard on it every day. They just need players so go play a great Pete Dye course and the 11th is a dead ringer for the island green at the stadium course. It’s a blast!!!
