Hokkaido (北海道, Hokkaidō, literally "Northern Sea Circuit") (Japanese: [hokkaꜜidoː] ( listen)), formerly known as Ezo, Yezo, Yeso, or Yesso, is the second largest island of Japan, and the largest and northernmost prefecture. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Honshu. The two islands are connected by the undersea railway Seikan Tunnel. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo, which is also its only ordinance-designated city. About 43 km north of Hokkaido lies Sakhalin Island, Russia, whereas to its east and north-east are the disputed Kuril Islands.

Nearly every kind of private and public building, from farmhouse to sleigh factory, is on display in this fascinating open-air museum.
Visited this place and we were just about the only visitors at the time we went and the colours of the leaves were beautiful. We understand that this is a historical place, but we were delighted by the colours and the tranquility. Nice place to spend some quiet time to appreciate its beauty during autumn.

Easy to get to on the bus, this is a must see if you are in Abishiri. We were expecting the museum to focus exclusively on the Ainu, but it covers so much more than that with information about all of the northern peoples in the polar regions. The audio guide is one of the best we've used - just enough information to keep you engaged and yet covers all the displays admirably. Absolutely fantastic.

This comprehensive interactive museum goes all the way back to prehistoric times.
Hokkaido is one Japan's four main islands, but it was the last to be settled. It still has a touch of the frontier about it. The original inhabitants were the Ainu, an Aboriginal people who have a polynesian background. They are bigger and hairier than most other Japanese. They were hunted mercilessly in days gone by. Many men in Hokkaido have heavy beards, an indicatgion of Ainu inheritance. This museum is very interesting, it's a bit out of the way biut it's well worth a trip.

History tells us that the Ainu were the only indigenous people in Japan; this center is part of an effort to preserve the lost culture.

Goryokaku Tower Official Account. View of Mt.Hakodate and the Tsugaru Straits from the observatory. The star-shaped vista that shines on the grounds of Goryokaku Fort, a special historic spot.
This attraction is certainly unusual! A star shaped building on top of a very tall tower . On ground level there are interesting shops, coffee bar and snacks. The elevator travels very quickly to the top where the views are terrific! There are interesting models and notices to read and definitely some great photographs to take! The tower is set in amazing gardens which were truly spectacular in autumn. There is also the house of the last Samurai to be seen. Goryokaku Tower and Park are a must!
