Victorian Timber Workers Memorial

Reviewed By Crystalline4u - Traralgon, Australia

I have been meaning to stop to look at this the last few times I passed through Heyfield... after having brunch with some family members locally on Saturday, I found time to go for a walk. I parked... then walked down their International Walkway... the day was overcast, but it was perfect for a walk. A permanent state memorial to Victoria’s timber workers has been built in Heyfield and opened in December 2015 to the public. This memorial was established with the hope that it will be a place where families who have suffered a loss may have their loved ones commemorated and join with others in remembrance and reflection. Whilst I haven't suffered a personal loss , it's hard not to feel sympathy towards the families that have. The shared information on the plaques reminds us of how important it is to work safely and go home to our families... because not everyone has that luxury. This is brilliantly set up for people to go and learn about what the effects of the timber industry have had on our state.

There are so many different trails and a wide variety of options. You can see some beautiful native creatures there like bush rats, kookaburras, and fairy wrens up close and personal. There aren't a lot of people on the trails but you'll get the occasional horse or dog off their lead. They have mainly gravel paths but there is a dirt path. Some great examples of Australian bushland with eucalyptus trees of all kinds, native insects and birds, and other native plants. At certain times of the day, it's utterly breathtaking. There are shady parts and parts in the sun.

St James Anglican Soldiers Memorial Church

This church is built from lovely old bricks that were probably hand made, lots of great colours in them. The architecture is impressive , not sure when it was built but it has seen some history past it’s door in the Main Street of town . There is a foundation stone dated 1920 on the building , I assume this was when it was renamed in honour of those that lost their lives in the First World War, A notice board says services are held here at 9.30am on the 1st.2nd.and 4th. Sunday’s of the month . Sadly church was closed so could not see inside Take the time and visit when in town.

Snowy Range Horseback Tours

Had a fantastic weekend ride with friends. Kevin Higgins and his wife Mel and daughter Jess took the ride to Mt Reynard and Mt Tamboritha. Kevin is a real high country character who has a wealth of knowledge about the area and its history. Mel and Jess are kind and helpful. The accommodation is in a bunkhouse and its very clean, hot showers, comfortable and warm. Huge campfire to sit around at night. The food was cooked with love by Mr Walker (John) and was plentiful, fresh and delicious. We had freshly made wraps for lunch, eggs and bacon or sausages & cereal for breakfast, roast beef and roast veggies for dinner. The horses were very quiet and a range available for beginners to experienced riders. They are well cared for and obviously loved by the Higgins family. There's lots of opportunities to canter or you can choose to walk if you prefer - there's no pressure to canter at all. We had a few beginners in our group and they felt relaxed and confident on the ride and managed to canter in the end. Beautiful scenery through the high country, with a different view around every corner. Photo opportunity from the top of the mountains was breathtaking. Very quiet relaxing spot, with no phone service (bonus), or electricity you can really unwind. Can charge your phone if need. Would recommend this ride to anyone who loves riding and the high country.
