Hesse (/ˈhɛsə/) or Hessia (German: Hessen [ˈhɛsn̩], Hessian dialect: Hesse [ˈhɛzə]) is a federal state (Land) of the Federal Republic of Germany, with just over six million inhabitants. The state capital is Wiesbaden; the largest city is Frankfurt am Main. Until the unification of Germany, the territory of Hesse was occupied by the Grand Duchy of Hesse, the Duchy of Nassau, the free city of Frankfurt and the Electorate of Hesse, known also as Hesse-Cassel. Due to divisions after World War II, the modern federal state does not cover the entire cultural region of Hesse, which includes both the State of Hesse and the area known as Rhenish Hesse (Rheinhessen) in the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Felsenmeer

I went to the Felsenmeer as a teenager and wanted to revisit when I was in the area. Exactly as I remember! - after all, a bunch of rocks don't change much. It costs 4 Euro to park the car - for a 12 hour period. There is a walkway around, so you don't have to climb if you don't want to. I didn't climb all the way to the top. It was a lot of fun climbing up and down the rocks - but be careful, you can get hurt if you don't pay attention. Definitely wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, bring water, and a camera. There is a restaurant at the bottom. We didn't go, but the menu offered standard German fare at very reasonable prices. Also, there are quite a few hiking trails. I saw a lot of families with small children - young and old. Can get sunny, so you may want to bring sunscreen.
