It was serendipitous to stumble upon this gorgeous garden in the middle of Montpellier. Admission is free. This is the oldest botanical garden in France (founded in 1593 by Henri IV) and is huge (almost 5 hectares)! It's amazing to walk through the green space - you don't even feel like you're in a city. Three security guards were at the entrance, but no obvious security measures were in place. This garden has a little of everything - roman ruins, a bamboo forest, succulents, a cactus garden in a greenhouse, a lotus pond with water lilies and frogs, and even a wishing tree! Yes - people wrote their dreams/wishes on a piece of paper and put their notes into one of the many crevices of the tree (maybe that's what the security guards are there for - to read all the wishes at the end of the day!). I wasn't prepared with a note, so I simply placed my hand on the tree, closed my eyes and shared my deepest desires. (Time will tell if that was sufficient!) You could easily spend a day if you wanted a peaceful escape from the world. There were lots of informational plaques throughout the garden (I can envision it being a great school trip destination for students!), so if one was so inclined, it could be educational as well. Definitely allow yourself a minimum of an hour or two to enjoy this oasis.
