Jinshanling Great Wall is located in Luanping County, Chengde, Hebei Province, 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Beijing. It used to be a sound defensive system including barrier walls, battlement walls, watchtowers, gun emplacements, shooting holes, horse blocking walls, and branch cities. Today, it is renowned as the "Paradise of Photographers" and a popular tourist destination because of its magnificent appearance and intoxicating scenery.
We did a day trip to Jinshanling from Beijing as part of a 3 week trip to China. That day was the absolute highlight of the holiday. The scenery was breathtaking, the autumn colours stunning and there were so few people around. We were also very fortunate with the weather on the day we were there, 23 October, we were in T-shirts, the sun was out, the sky clear blue, we could see for miles - the perfect setting to see the Great Wall in its full glory. The journey from Beijing took about 2 hours in a private minibus. We hiked from the West Gate to the East Gate, which took just under 4 hours although that did include frequent photo stops, pauses to admire the view and also, at times, a chance to get our breath back after a clamber up a particularly steep bit or to brace ourselves for the next climb! Those challenging sections went towards making it such an amazing experience. I would not recommend the walk unless you are fit. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes and bring plenty of water although you can buy water and souvenirs along the route.

This is an important and famous section of The Great Wall originally built in 583 AM that played a significant role in the military defense of the Ming Dynasty. Shanhaiguan Pass is located in the small harbor town of Qinhuangdao by the Sea.
Having been to the Great Wall in the Beijing area on a previous trip, we went for an alternative experience at Shanhaiguan to see the Wall from the sea and into the mountains. We visited with a private day tour with a long train trip from and back to Beijing. The tour was quite helpful for us as tourists only speaking English as getting around from the train station in other areas in Shanhaiguan, while not impossible for tourists, would be challenging. In the off season there were no crowds which was nice. The museum is worthwhile and informative. It has English translation for English-speaking visitors. The wall and gate at the Pass is great. Quite expansive in its' rebuilt/maintained form and worth a good amount of time walking about and on top of. The town surrounding the wall is also quite interesting. Just nearby we did a tour of a large family house/compound once owned by a local wealthy family. Our guide in his childhood had lived there after it was converted to communal housing by the local Party redistribution of land in the area in the 50s and gave us some interesting insight. For photo taking purposes, just be mindful that if you visit during a bad pollution period for Beijing, the area between Shanghaiguan and Beijing is where a lot of steel production and other industry happens and so don't expect the pollution to dissipate at all. We earlier climbed the wall in the mountains nearby and visited the Dragon's Head as the Wall starts at/reaches the sea. Both great for visits and recommended.

High-class museum on collections, especially the ground floor ‘Princess Tomb’. When visit China’s provincial city, it’s advisable to spend at least 2 hours to visit its own Provincial Museum.
