The two lava flow areas on the west end have roads across them to see the devastation and for the people to access what was once their homes, and new dwellings are being erected on top of the flows. Amazing and sad too. I am putting a picture of Isaac Hale Beach Park and the enormous lava flow showing how it cut off the Highway 137 and redid the park area. The roads are narrow and treacherous to the park, but well worth it for nature lovers.

Plenty of shops/restaurants/dessert places. One of our favorite spots every time we come to Maui! Must do: -Cheeseburger in Paradise with its scenic location and good drinks (Hard Rock is also in this same area) -Dole Whip for dessert -And of course...Banyan Court Park...AMAZING! Park on side streets, $3-7 for all day parking depending on time you get there. It’s all close and so much to see!

We stopped here on our last day to do some last minute shopping. Great little shops and you also learn history about the sugar mill plantation.

Holualoa Village

Many artists are galleries are found here

This artist colony has been hit hard by the lack of tourist trade. The shops are fun and offer a wide range of items from very upscale art to tourist tchotchkes. It's quaint and enjoyable, a relaxed village to stroll. Many shops were closed when we visited owing to the pandemic, but the ones that were opened offered a very satisfying time.

If you're an experienced open water swimmer or a lap pool swimmer looking to try your first ocean swim, this spot is fantastic. From here, you can swim the Ironman swim course along buoys (some of which are there year-round). In early October, the water was a balmy 82ish degrees, and very clear. For several hundred yards, you're over coral in crystal clear water, so you can spot a few fish as you swim. If you're not a super confident swimmer and have a buddy who wants to Stand-up-paddle or kayak along to spot you, you can rent a SUP or kayak from the Kona Boys Stand right at the pier. There is also a community group that does a swim most mornings at 8am, so you may be able to join some other swimmers for less of the sense of "I'm in the ocean all by myself!" And there's also a little shelf where you can leave your shoes and a few items. I left shoes there twice and they were still there afterwards.

Do not miss this area if your spending more than a day in Honolulu! It’s only 15 minutes by car from Waikiki, 5 minutes from King Kamehameha and Iolani Palace. I travel a lot and I try to find cool start art wherever I go and this is by far one of the best collections I’ve come across! There are just a ton of art pieces in about a 4 block radius in any direction from Mother Waldron neighborhood park. Just park near there and wander around. You won’t regret it!!
