Gytheio (Greek: Γύθειο, [ˈʝiθio]), the ancient Gythium or Gytheion (Ancient Greek: Γύθειον), is a town and a former municipality in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality East Mani, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 197.313 km. It was the seaport of Sparta, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north. Gytheio used to be an important port until it was destroyed in 4th century AD, possibly by an earthquake. Today it is the largest and most important town in Mani. It is also the seat of the municipality of East Mani.

Visited this beach a couple of times while staying in nearby Pylos. It was recommended to us by the reception staff at our hotel. This is a beautiful long sandy beach and popular with with wind surfers. Not very busy when we were there and we were not charged for using sunbeds and umbrella. Presume they belonged to the nearby beach bar where we did buy drinks on each visit. I would happily return here for a beach based holiday and made a note of some accommodation that was next to the beach for future reference! There is also camping nearby.

The lighthouse is at the end of a peninsula on your way to the village of Gytheio. You can park your car at the entrance of the peninsula and walk to it.
