This spectacular 18-hole golf course meanders through natural sand dunes, lakes and wildlife areas. Kiva Dunes has always earned my vote as Alabama’s top public golf venue, amongst a slew of top contenders. So how could I possibly nominate Kiva for this honor after three - putting 5 times. Easy....the course architect understood the principles of green and pin placement to maximize difficulty for off-line tee balls, yet freeing up the possibilities of birdies for well-placed drives. But you gotta love those swoopingly roller coaster style greens with pins tucked into unreachable little shelves, where balls landing beside pins could finish 30 yards away. And then those 5 holes where elephant burial grounds divide the greens into two unrecognizable sectors, like a front pin on the extra hard 7th, when your shot is at the back. On the card, #7 is listed as the number one handicap hole, but I have news. It isn’t really, since the number one hole is the incredible 9th, the South’s best hole of the century. At less than 400 yards and needing a superior drive, the approach shot requires nerves of steel for a mid-iron over a long pond to a water-hugging green...yeesh and double yeesh. Course conditions are the best in ten years, with fairways in mid-season form and greens at their loathsome best. Oh, Kiva’s practice facilities are superb, but I really have to say it...the scorecard could use a bit of revision, like a massive do-over adding a dash of colour mayhap.

Cotton Creek at Craft Farms

True to its Palmer design, this traditional 18-hole masterpiece was laid out to challenge rather than intimidate, with numerous risk/reward opportunities throughout. Golf Digest has consistently rated Cotton Creek as one of the Best Places to Play! This 4-star course, located in Gulf Shores, Alabama, features tree-lined, rolling fairways surrounded by lakes. The lush course is challenging for low handicap players but with five staggered tee boxes, it is a fun challenge for golfers at any level.

Grill in the golf club has the best gumbo on Pleasure Island. The Grill serves breakfast all-day and the salads are as good as the gumbo and don't forget the Egle Burger. All of the food is excellent as well as the service.

Craft Farms Golf Course

On family vacation last week in Gulf Shores and only planned on two rounds - Cypress Bend and Kiva Dunes. Had such a good experience at Kraft Farms I found time for two more rounds there. Every course can be nit-picked, but considering course design, condition, facilities, pace of play, service and price, there's nothing close to Kraft Farms. My understanding is the Cotton Creek course is more difficult than Cypress Bend which is more of a 'resort style' course. Of most significance, the people and quality of service was outstanding from the moment you get out of the car. Paola, in the pro shop, goes above and beyond. Bill and Ryan were awesome. I highly recommend this course.
