The classicistic functional building was erected in 1826 as a hospital of the agricultural workhouse established in Gustrow Castle. Until 1998 the building was used as a hospital. The museum documents the history, art and culture of the Barlach city on 500 m² exhibition space. The city museum, founded in 1892, is one of the most important cultural-historical museums in Western Pomerania.
